body in survival mode???

    question for those in the know. been reading alot of threads here and people mentioning about the body going into survival mode if they exercise too much and don't eat enough calories. but if you were able to calculate your daily calorie needs and decided to cut 500 a day which in theory means over 7 days a pound should be lost (-3500 cals = 1 pound i believe). but what i'm wondering is what is the minimum you can cut per day before your body goes into survival mode and burns muscle instead of fat and rendering your training useless really?! is it a certain percentage per day or what?! hope this makes sense!!
