Yes, you can copy your iTunes library to any external storage you like. You can drag and drop the whole folder or just select which tracks you'd like to back up right from the iTunes window.

Older iTunes tracks contain DRM which prevent them being used on more than 4 machines (I think) - all iTunes tracks you buy now do not contain DRM and so can be passed from machine to machine freely. The OP didn't mention using them on a different machine though, just backing up tracks on his own machine.

well my machone is 4 years old and has had 2 hard drive transplants in that time.....so really need to have some means of backing them up...a memory stick should be fine by dragging the library file?
