I've been trying for ages now and I can't get through at all. The website just displays "The service is unavailable. Server is too busy"

"The service is unavailable. Server is too busy"

True, looks like a 53 error, probably because about 55million folks across 4 corners of the world are trying to log on for a luckie lookie.

Negative, it's over subscribed. Extra places (will be already offered) which will be retracted due to people not meeting the correct criteria.

A bit like plane tickets, it's oversold as it's assumed that not everyone will get aboard, even with a ticket in hand. There is a fixed threshold.

Seems to be getting harder to according to some websites (data unverified) as the results/quota for Ireland (N&S) have been dropping.
DV2017 full results not available as yet, but these are some figures (below) for 2015 & '16.

There is no quota for Ireland, there is only a quota for the European zone as a whole

If there is no approximate quota's per country then why does uzbekistan (30m) normally receive 4,000+ whilst Isle of Ireland (6.5m) receive around 150?

Far more people from Uzbekistan enter the lottery

The usual question - but does anyone know a good service that takes good photographs that meet the requirements for the DV Lottery?

You can just take a selfie against an appropriate background. The application system will tell you if it meets the requirements when you upload it.

There's no need to worry about actual photos until you win and are called for interview. In that case, there's a chemist beside the US embassy in Ballsbridge that provides hardcopy photos to the exact specifications required.

Just applied - good job I'd commented in here previously and this thread popped up to remind me!

    Done!

Now it will be interesting to see if there's any hope this time round. :)

How does the US visa lottery go for someone in college Part Time?
What happens if your entry was successful but you've yet to finish college here?

And do you need so much in a bank account?

If you win it can take from 1 month to 1 year before you are called to the US Embassy for the formal interview.

Then you have 6 months to enter the United States and ratify your intention to live and work in the country.

However, you can also then return to your own country for a period not longer than 1 year before the US authorities decide that you have rescinded their invitation.

So you have 18 months minimum to finish the course.

You have to be able to prove that you can support yourself financially when you enter the USA. You need $12k at a minimum in your bank account. You also need to show that the figure was accumulated over time

Just thinking about that requirement. That is insane. How the hell are thousands of selected applicants from [basically] developing countries supposed to have $12,000 in savings accumulated over a period of time?

That's why they randomly select 100,000 people and only give 55,000 greencards. The other 45,000 people will fall into this bracket. They don't want you to win the greencard, go over and be a burden on the system. Most of the people are serious people who have researched what it takes to enter the U.S with a green card and have planned. Unfortunately if you have entered on a whim as you kind of like the idea of winning and moving to the States it's not as easy as that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭silja

You don't necessarily need the $12'000 in the bank, if you can prove other ways of supporting yourself, but there is more leeway for the CO (Consular Officer) to decide if, say, you are very employable/ have a job offer state side.

Well when I won that's what it was. Don't think it's changed from 2009 but I could be wrong.

    Hi,

I'm going to do this DV Lottery. Does anyone know how many people from Ireland apply each year? I'm just trying to figure what the chances are. Is it true that you're chances are doubled if you apply with your spouse?

Well if your spouse is applying then yeah you will have two applications in instead of one.
