    http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/around-town/campaign-to-rename-city-train-station-after-tragic-singer-stephen-2108197.html
DUBLIN City Council is to consider a proposal to name a train station after tragic Boyzone singer Stephen Gately.
Independent councillor Christy Burke has tabled a motion calling on the local authority to rename the Docklands stop in Dublin 1 after the late star.
The rail station is located in the heart of Gately's home community, where he is idolised.
"I put a motion in this morning for the April meeting that the central area committee agrees that we call it after Stephen," Cllr Burke told the Herald.
"It would be appropriate as he came from the area. Boyzone have already said they would pay for a statue (of Stephen)," he added.
He said: "If it gets through the area committee in April it will go before the May city council meeting."
Cllr Burke wants to see the official naming ceremony taking place on St Patrick's Day next year.
"He was an ambassador for Dublin and particularly for Sheriff Street. His family are a rock in that community," the City Hall member said.
News of Cllr Burke's proposal has come after ITV aired a special tribute show dedicated to Gately's memory.
Stephen died at the age of 33 last October while on holiday with his husband Andrew Cowles in the Spanish resort island of Majorca.
His funeral was attended by family and close friends, with more than 3,500 fans listening to the service on speakers outside St Laurence O'Toole's Church.
Father Declan Blake told mourners: "Through his singing and entertaining, Stephen touched the lives of many, many people.
"He brought great joy and lifted the hearts of many people. Stephen, as we all know, was a real gentleman, he was kind, caring and he was very talented."
Fr Blake said Gately supported charities and brought children happiness by visiting them in hospital.
The ITV show Boyzone: A Tribute To Stephen Gately featured Nadine Coyle and a host of other stars including the band members themselves.
Autopsy reports confirmed Gately suffered an acute pulmonary oedema -- or sudden build up of fluid in the lungs -- thought to have been caused by a heart attack.
His manager Louis Walsh said: "Of all the people I've worked with, I don't think anybody thanked me as much as Stephen.
"He used to always say to me 'if I wasn't in Boyzone I don't know where I'd be today, thank you'."

Now, I was very sad over the death of Stephen Gately, but this is a bit cringey. There are much more deserving Irish people who have passed away who deserve to have stations named after them!

Imagine, for instance, travelling through London on the tube and hearing "Next stop, H from Steps Station"

Jesus wept. If anyone needed proof that most of our councillors should be taken out and shot then have a rubbish bin named after them.

    Jesus fucking wept.

I'm sure he was a decent guy and everything... but naming a train station after the second least untalented member of a crap pop band? What?

Ah now, you'd think if an Dublin inner city stop was to be named after anyone it could at least be Tony Gregory. Idiots.

It was proposed to name Cork Airport "Gallagher International Airport" after Rory Gallagher and it never happened.

What about Phil Lynot? He deserves something?

Are there any train stations in irleand named after dead singers?

If they were going to start a trend he wouldnt be the first person on most people's minds.

At least we know the answer to the question "was he the train or was he the station"?

What happens when the other 4 - 5 members die? There arent enough unnamed stations to go around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,229 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

There should be a Gravy Station for the gravy trains that operate 24/7.

+1. There was a statue of him voted for about 5/6 years ago; but I haven't heard anything of that since... it's a shame.

Given your country has such a rich history of the arts, is Stephen fúcking Gately the only person they could think of?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,605 ✭✭✭Fizman

Right so I had a quick look at the map of London underground to see if he could be officially affiliated with one that is suitably named, instead of renaming one of our own.

First off I saw Queensbury. Then I spotted Cockfosters, so thought right this is too easy so we'll just give him that station. What did I spot at the bottom.......

    Mudchute!

Some of you are so homophobic it's unreal.
The man is dead, he never did you any harm, have some respect.
He is someone's son, brother and friend, how would you like if people talked about your dead relatives and friends like that?

Nobody was homophobic, its silly to name a public building after a singer, gay or not

Boston already has an airport called after Johnny Logan, so it's only fitting that Dublin should commemorate one of our own.
