GPS editing help

    I'd like to start keeping better track of my training. I want to be able to view it on Garmin Connect but I like Sport Tracks as well.

    Is there a tool that any of you experts use to edit your gpx/tcx records? Say if I forget to stop my Garmin after a race and I want to edit it to put the correct finish time in what tool would I use to do that.

    Also, I did a duathlon in the park and I would like to split the current record into run/t1/cycle/t2/run. I didn't hit the lap button between cycle and t2 so t2 and the 2nd run time are combined. Not a big problem but if I hadn't used the lap function on my Garmin 305 how would I manually edit it to split it into 5 sections?

    If I do find a 3rd party editing tool can I then update my Garmin Connect record with it.

    Lastly, if for some reason I didn't get a satellite lock for the first 10 minutes of a run but I know exactly the route I took can I manually update the route?

    Been a while since I bothered spliting any gpx tracks up but I think I was just using MapSource and a text editor at the time to remove the unwanted sections of tracks, this was just for uploading stuff to OSM so could be relatively inaccurate with the tracks compared to a running log. It was relatively simple to combine multiple tracks into the same gpx file and have them appear as separate items in Mapsource, which would probably then have the same effect in the likes of SportsTracks, but I never tried it and am not sure what SportsTracks would make of the manually edited file.

    Not sure if Kursty has done anything along the lines you want, but no doubt he'll be along shortly with GPS in hand.

    You could certainly create a gpx file manually, it would be incredible tedious though. You might be able to do something like exporting a track from the likes of GoogleMaps and converting it the gpx, and then combining it that way, but you'd have a big issue with time stamps of each point I suspect.

    It does actually sound like a fun* idea to try and fix though.

    * Yes, I know, but there are a couple of screws loose somewhere round here.

    >> When I have had to do this, I would usually use notepad, and cut sections out based on the time-stamp. Alternatively, because GPX is just a form of XML, you can use any free or OpenSource XML editor, and that will at least warn you if you break or have inconsistent tags.
    >> You would need to manually wrap sections of Trackpoints, in <LAP> nodes and include all of the other elements/data associated with laps, e.g:
    <Lap StartTime="2010-03-21T13:12:32.000Z">
            <TotalTimeSeconds>26.72</TotalTimeSeconds>
            <DistanceMeters>94.39</DistanceMeters>
            <MaximumSpeed>3.881753</MaximumSpeed>
            <Calories>6</Calories>
            <AverageHeartRateBpm>
              <Value>145</Value>
            </AverageHeartRateBpm>
            <MaximumHeartRateBpm>
              <Value>146</Value>
            </MaximumHeartRateBpm>
            <Intensity>Active</Intensity>
            <TriggerMethod>Manual</TriggerMethod>
            <Track>

    It would be a lot of trouble for little gain. As you can see above, you are entering a lot of pre-calculated data, etc. so Garmin Connect would not re-calculate this for you, based on your 'new laps'. If you make any mistakes with the tags, then Garmin connect (and Sportstracks for that matter) will not be able to interpret it correctly.
    If I do find a 3rd party editing tool can I then update my Garmin Connect record with it.
    Sure,as long as it doesn't change the structure of the file (TCX).
    Lastly, if for some reason I didn't get a satellite lock for the first 10 minutes of a run but I know exactly the route I took can I manually update the route?
    >> While you could potentially add in the route you took, you couldn't add any of the other data associated with the route (speed, time, calories etc), so GC or Sportracks wouldn't know how to interpret the extra information. If you install Garmin mapsource, it's very easy to join a couple of routes (GPX format) together. But once you have them combined, I don't think you could inport them into one of the other tools without the missing metadata.

    The various Garmin schemas are available here: http://developer.garmin.com/schemas/

    Just to add, you probably already know this, but sportstracks allows you to sub-divide your activity based on pre-defined splits (which last time I looked were based on distance). Perhaps there's another way of doing it based on specified time-slices?

    I keep meaning to go back and take another look at Sportstracks, but never find the time for it.

    All of the time. I'm fully qualified. (In other words, I read the manual. :))

    Last post on this thread (for a while anyway!). I found this on the Sportstracks Tutorial page.
    Click the Add Split button to add a split. When the Add Split window appears, enter the total elapsed time from the start of the activity (not the split time) for the split. In the distance field enter the split distance. If you took a heart-rate reading you can enter this also.

    Continue adding splits for the entire workout, or as many as you recorded. You can also delete a split and re-enter a new time, or edit the split distance and heart-rate for a split from this window.

    I'm not sure if this is specific to manual activities only (it's a sub-section of Manually entering an activity).

    Lads, thanks a million for the help, especially Krusty. I'll start messing around with it tonight.

    I did see the manual upload button on Garmin Connect. So I'll be able to upload the doctored .tcx files that way. Sound.

    Might be a little task for the programmers among us, thats if its in XML format I could have a look at doing some interface on it if its of any use to lads.

    Not sure if it would be of any benefit to yous though.

    Last post on the subject (I promise!). Sportstracks will do most of what you need.

    You can add as many manual splits as you like. So, you could for example:
    Add a split at time +51:31 (when you started transition 1)
    Add a split at time +54:31 (when you finished transition 1).
    etc.
    etc.

    You can split an activity (to erase sections of an activity):
    Go to [Edit activity] [Split]

    To add the missing part of the route, while you were waiting for GPS signal:
    In the map window, just change the explore drop-down option to [Edit] and draw away to your hearts content.

    Unfortunately, sportstracks doesn't seem to export lap information (or else Garmin doesn't import it). So while you can store all this extra information in ST, you might have additional difficulties getting it into GC or GTC.

    I haven't looked back since I started using Sportstracks. It does the business for me and I've done simple editing of the gps when I've forgotten to press stop etc as the original question asked. I only use Garmin Connect the odd time now.
