Just tried to price return tickets from Dublin-Cork this weekend with Irish Rail. I'm told each leg of the journey costs €20 but when I click to calculate the full price it comes back with €56. There's no breakdown of this price and I find this very misleading.

I know that new legislation was introduced recently to force Airlines to display the full cost of the ticket. Is this same legislation applicable to Irish Rail?

€56 is such a rip off considering it takes longer than a car and costs the same in terms of petrol.

I don't follow? If you enter Dublin as departure and Cork as arrival for this Saturday and coming back Sunday you'll see what I mean. All but one of the trains on each day costs €20 each yet the total comes in as €56 when you check price.

there is a booking fee per journey when using credit cards but I didn't think it was that high

That still needs to be added to the fee. It's €3 per journey.

    This is actually crazy money!

    Just tried it

    Sat 20 euro out
    Sun 36 euro back

    56 euro

    Pay laser no charge
Total 56 euro vs 71 euro at booking office

    Seems right to me

Different trains are priced at different fares.

OK - having checked the following is the case:

    Saturday - Dublin to Cork
The 0700 and 1400 are both EUR 10.
    The 0800, 0900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300 and 1900 are all EUR 20.
    The 1500, 1600, 1700, 1705, 1800 and 2100 are all EUR 36.

    Sunday - Cork to Dublin
    The 1430 is EUR 20.
All other trains are EUR 36.

When you combine any of the above you get whatever the total is for two singles, be it EUR 30, EUR 40, EUR 46, EUR 56, or EUR 72.

The fares are coming up correctly.

The new Irish internet rail fares are a great system if you ask me, especially compared to what there was a few years back.

To put it in perspective, and to show that Irish prices are far from excessive or a rip off, a similar journey of 250km in Germany** on similar trains (regional train standard) costs 40 euro EACH WAY or with better trains 61 Euro EACH WAY on an ICE train, if you are paying standard walk up fares.

And in Germany, the cheapest you will get such an intercity fare is 20 euro each way, whilst in Ireland its as little as a tenner.

Irish Rail is far from expensive in International comparison.

**Munich to Lichtenfels is almost exactly the 250km apart which I used for the example
