    Hi all,
Just wondering if it normal to feel so sore after a race.?
I ran a 10K in Galbally Co.Wexford on Sunday. It was a tough hilly track.
My legs are killing me, the quads are sore which can be expected from the long hills.
But my bones on my left leg are very sore in around my knee and down on either side of my shin.:(
I have ran a 10K and a 10Mile before and never felt pain like this before.
Im doing around 15-20 miles a week i have propper runners and never had shin splints or It band problems. Could it be Lactic acid?
    What do you guys think?
    Cheers
    Steoc.

Sounds like you need to see a doctor/physio. Anything with the word 'bones' probably shouldn't be discussed here. But lactic acid is not something that would typically affect bones. It's more typically associated with muscles, tendons and joints (though I may be wrong about the joints!).

Have you done many 10K races (or other distances) before?

I would just leave it for a day or two. As it happens, I ran a race on Sunday and I'm sore as well. It very much depends on the race profile, the last really hilly race I ran affected me for an entire week. If you're still in pain by, say, Friday, you might want to have a closer look at things.

It's definitely not lactic acid. That's gone after a couple of hours. If it's muscle soreness, that will be gone within the next few days.

I only have two other races under my belt the Dungarvan 10 miler and my sport 10K
Both went well was out running the next day.
I did run a 9 mile LSR the wednesday before the race, maybe that could be a factor?
Thanks for the reply Krusty and TFB.

Without (of course!) providing any medical advice, it has sometimes been observed among runners who increase their mileage and/or intensity from that with which they are normally accustomed, a form of pain in the shins (commonly collectively described as shin splints) can be observed. This can cause pain along the tibia or shin bone. Common treatments for the problem described above would include rest, ice, and other such treatments which form part of the RICE acronym, followed by expert advice from a doctor or physical specialist, should the problem fail to subside.

But yes, it's pretty normal to feel sore after a race.

Without (of course!) providing any medical advice,----Sounds like Iliotibial Band syndrome. Get a physio to check it out.

It doesnt sound like ITBs. ITB runs on the outer side of the quads and wouldnt give refered pain to the shins. The pain along the shins does sound like shin splints, however, this term is overused and may only be the tightening of the muscle on the inside of the shin which does give the same feeling as shin splints.
Two days after a race is normally the worst so see how you feel after that.
Obviously ice is a good form of self treatment so i would suggest using an ice cup.
To make and ice cup. Fill a foam cup or an empty yoghurt pot with water. Freeze it. Peel away to edges at the top and massage the area with the block of ice. I found this works better then just leaving an ice pack on your affected area.

What half marathon are you doing out of interest.

Well went to the Physio last night.
I feal like a right dummy.
Was all down to wearing different runners. I own 2 types Mizuno wave and Brooks Adrenaline. I did most of my running in the Mizuno's and have recently started running in the Brooks. Both i bought after having Gait analysis. I am a mild overpronator. Dont ask me why i bought 2 different pairs, Green i suppose.
When i think back i was always sore or had slight pull/strains when wearing the brooks.
The Physio said that the pain i am feeling is from the trama of the race, not the It band thankfully.
So i have to rest till Saturday and see how i feel, hope to be back on the road for a LSR Saturday morning.
Im running the Wexford Half MAy 2nd.
Just hope to God i never feel pain like it again.(im a big girls blouse really)
    Thanks all. Steoc
