So - saw this in HMV at the weekend for 23 euro. Having just seen in in Game for 47 I thought - wow - this has got to be a mistake - better pick one up now...

So last night comes along. Slap it on the box and wait the 10 minutes while the obligatory update installs.
Then sat back and waited to play, and waited and waited - got to fight a little - then some more waiting with stupid cut-scenes and gratuitous flesh scenes. Sarah Palin anyone - oh man feel ill just thinking back on that....

In the end - after "playing" for around 30 minutes, which equated to 5min after you take out all the movies, stills etc I have an epiphany... I got punked. So now back out today to trade this in, I know it will be inflicted on some other poor eijit - but right now this is up there as the worst game of the decade. The 9/10 sticker from Playstation mag should have been the warning - forgot how biased they are but we live and learn I guess.

Yeah. Worst part is, the cutscenes aren't even good. Especially when it goes all arty with the filmstrip thing. Seriously annoying.

wtf is this bull****? Fair enough if you didn't like the cut-scenes... They have a particular style to them that won't float everyone's boat, but if you had played enough of the game to actually experience it, you'd realise how silly a statement like that really is.

What? You people are crazy! Alright, so the PS3 conversion was pretty crap compared to the 360 version, but it's a brilliant game. Totally daft and out there but it's a million times more fun than the po-faced God of War series, the gameplay mechanics are ballanced to perfection and it's seriously one of the best games I've played in years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭positron

Yeah, the starting video sequences just goes on and on and on..!

I have read so many good reviews of this game, but I was a bit disappointed when I tried playing it. It's similar to many other games like GoW etc, just that it's a girl and there big boobs instead of a dude with big muscles. It's very stylistic and will appeal to those who like the anime style, but I personally, after spending weeks playing Battlefield, just can't get to like it enough to appreciate it.

Too right about Sarah Palin looks alright! :D

I didn't think the gameplay was all that great either. Much prefer God Of War or Devil May Cry.

And even though I only played it about a month ago, I find that it was very unmemorable. Can't remember anything really great about it. Especially levels where you're
on the motorbike or on the rocket. Jesus that rocket level annoyed me so much

The enemies were bland, the story and characters were crap, and the best looking moves were generally the weakest and left you vunerable. The difficulty spiked like crazy, the items and potions thing was terrible, and generally, I just really didn't care about it.

Alright to kill some time, but not worth the hype in my opinion
And having her strike a pose, basically get naked and have her hair or whatever kill bosses was just ridiculous and felt incredibly forced, as if tittilation was the point of the game
Also, the bad guy was just crap. Reminded me of Arius from Devil May Cry 2. Terribly acted and terrible design. When it came to fighting him, I couldn't care less

Yeah, overall, I was very disappointed

It was never likely to appeal to everyone, the difficulty spikes are massive, the game is meant to be played with a maxed out character and the story is trash.
What it does have is probably the deepest combat system in a game of its type, which unfortunately takes a long time to even get to grips with.
Anyone buying it expecting a god of war mash fest will be sorely disappointed.

You only played it for 30 minutes and made a decision on the game because you were crap enough to die in it. You deserve to miss out on one of the best games in ages.

Sorry - just to clarify this.
I only played it for 5 minutes.
I sat and watched the screen for 30 minutes, while my thumbs died of boredom.

Yup - am sure it will appeal to some. Just not to me. Severe case of - try the demo and once more ignore ratings from Playstation mag.

Each to their own however, I like to play games, not sit and watch dumb ass film reels while listening to inane music...

That was your first mistake, get past the opening bits and it becomes brilliant

This game has a radical new feature that you might not have heard of... Skippable cutscenes.
I personally liked them for the OTT cheese factor, but you make it sound like you had no choice but to sit through them.

One of the best games of the year so far imo, unbelievably fluid with so much room for creative combos if you ever develop the skills needed (I didn't:o)

Wait, what? You only played it for five minutes? Look, do yourself a massive favour and go back and play it for two or three hours. If you still don't like it by then, then fair enough, maybe it really isn't for you but it's a deeply brilliant game with so much depth to it that judging it after just five minutes is like saying Star Wars is crap after watching the opening title text sequence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

Haven't played the game myself, am planning to though. But really dude come on, 5 minutes? Pretty damn pathetic if you ask me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 102 ✭✭Cold|Fusion

Installing the most part of the game to the PS3's hard drive from the games title menu after the update, speeds up loading times and whatnot.

Have only played the demo of Bayonetta but this confused me. What exactly are they being biased towards? It's not a PS3 exclusive or anything so I'm curious how this is more evidence of the official playstation magazine's bias?

Playing this on xbox at the moment. Haven't played any game in its genre previously. I find that the cutscenes are long and not really worthwhile, The story is poor as well which doesn't help with the extended cut scenes.

The gameplay though is where it's at. I'm near the end of the game on a playthrough on normal and have loved the combat. The difficulty is there in spades as well which I love but pulling off an intense battle with well strung together combos is great and the visuals when fighting are amazing. So much going on.

With only 1 play through I've barely scratched the surface in what the game has available for purchasing upgrades and the likes. Taking the time to master the combos would greatly enhance the game as well. I don't have time for anything more than one play through but there's definitely gameplay here for more than 5 mins.

    Guess we'll agree to disagree.

Just reinforces need for use of demo's and not to jump on every apparent steal.
Anyway - games gone - traded in for GOW3 - let the bloodletting commence.

Were it not for the QTEs, minigames (*** you angel attack) and the stupidly easy boss fights, Bayonetta would probably be the perfect hack 'n slash game.

You're never going to get a very good story or fleshed out characters with a game like this. Its just not that type of game. Its all about the combat, and Bayonetta's combat system is the best I've seen in ages.

    Game & 20 euro.
Since I got it for 22 - this is pretty good.

You might as well just go straight back for a refund... GoWIII has cutscenes too, only this time they're unskippable!

Different strokes for different folks, but GoW is a game that I've rented and will send straight back as soon as I complete it, but Bayonetta's combat system is something that will keep me coming back to it for years to come...

At least GoW has a story that makes sense! I tried with Bayonetta, I really did, but after about 5 levels, I just skipped everything. Pure and utter nonsense. The fighting was pretty cool, but the story? Pure and utter drivel of the highest order.

    Bayonetta still wins :)

Don't get me wrong - I enjoy cutscenes - when they make sense, not backtracked with elevator music from Penang and most of all when they really add to the game. For me (me now not everyone else) - they didn't. To date I can normally tell if I within the first 30 min, eg Fallout - just had huge problems seeing beyond the greyness - but memories of Oblivion carried me through the first 10 hours before my eyeballs nearly bursting out of my head forced me to eject that disc.

As I said - this is just a case of the wrong game at the wrong time. Shame - really loved DMC, was kinda hoping for a similar game...

    This game?

Not for me! Played the latest DMC, this looks very similar! I enjoyed the boss fights but those button bashers do my nut in!

It's a fantastic game, one of the best I've played in ages. They just made a hash of the PS3 version. 360 version runs smoothly, little to no loading and looks better.

Picked this up today, saw it in HMV for E23 and thought I'd be hard pushed to do better in immediate future. Played the demo and enjoyed it and its still new enough that I should be able to get a decent trade in value in the near future.

Wont actually get to play it till next week, looking forward to it.

If you think Bayonetta is a button basher, you're doing it wrong.

I tried playing DMC4 again recently after playing Bayonetta and just couldn't get into it at all, still a good game but it just lacks a certain something... (boobies, perhaps!)

<rant> It really annoys me that people can play a game for 5 minutes or 30 minutes and give up on a game, its a really defeatist attitude.
Especially if you see the 9/10 ratings or the threads and websites raving about it. Sure if you dont like it , fine ! but dont give out about because you as an individual dont like it...
This comes up time and time again and the minority always loses out !
    </rant>

I liked the demo but too many good games at the mo

No the combat is all about combos, but its really well done, you're not just pressing x,x,x,x,o then watching an animation for 5 minutes, you have to switch between weapons and modes on the fly, and when you get a huge combo strung together it feels great.

If that rant was directed at me, I didn't actually give out about it! It looks similar to a game I've played before (in full) and didn't really enjoy. I might give the demo a lash and see what I think. Anything I posted was more to get other people to tell me what the gameplay was like than anything else! It's all well and good if a game get's 9/10 on some gamer website but, not everybody has to like all genres of games to be a gamer. Some genres have just never appealed to me and I don't enjoy them. Just because they get a great score, doesn't mean everyone will love them!
