It's handy to be nuts if you're a runner :)

Runners are nuts. I still haven't figured out if running attracts nuts or drives sane people nuts. However Ian O'Riordain had a nice piece on Saturday comparing mad runners to mad actors

There are several reasons for this, but my suspicion is our top marathon runners aren’t mad enough anymore. Fagan is at least breaking that mould, putting some madness back in the method.
That has the be the quote of the year so far.

I understand where O'Riordan is coming from in a sense but I do not agree with this correlation as a reason for Gillicks disqualification in Doha. All of the runners in that final would have had the "crazy desire to succeed" he speaks of to get them to the final in the first place.

When they get to the final they must leave the madness thet drove them to train so hard in the dressing room and perform intelligently and finish with as high up a position as possible. This performing includes adjusting tactics mid race if the win is no longer possible.

Same for acting, except of course actors get any amount of takes they like.

I think a dissapointed O'Riordan's report last Monday was more realistic and maybe the saturday column is rationalising Gillicks error to balance that out.

OBSTRUCTION. IT’S ONE of the cardinal sins of indoor running. Commit it not once but twice in the same race and there’s no room for forgiveness, which explains why David Gillick has left Doha empty-handed after his stormy World Indoor 400 metres final..........
    ..........
After the race Gillick made some strong accusations against Jackson: “I went for it, and he (Jackson) was the one that cut across me. He messed me up and messed himself up. I’m bitterly disappointed . . . another athletes’ stupidity cost me my medal.”

Unfortunately it wasn’t quite as straightforward as that, and as the US objection proved, Gillick’s physical tactics weren’t on.
