Hey everyone, want to get somewhere in Greece that's pretty resort-tastic...ie somewhere we can just kick back for a few days (beach, pool, sunshine, books)...but also hoping to maybe do a day trip to athens. anyone recommend a location that could fit the bill? Cheers!

Hi, if you want to visit Athens for a day, being based on the Saronic islands might be best. They are the nearest to the capital http://www.greektravel.com/greekislands/saronic.htm

I haven't been to these before, but I don't think you can go wrong with any Greek island :D

Wouldn't recommend a trip to Athens, it's the dirtiest place I ever visited!! Any of the greek islands is great but my favourite is Crete.

I found Athens a bit meh, like another poster said it's fairly dirty, very grey, sprawling and industrialised. If you want to see the New Acropolis Museum, Parthenon et al maybe it would be worth it for a day or two, but I wouldn't base myself there.

If you're looking for a typical unspoilt area, I'd recommend the Pelopponnese as a base. It's about a 4 - 5 hour drive from Athens (the drive isn't for the faint-hearted though) otherwise you can get a train from Athens, and. It's so tranquil, and the scenery is stunning (apparently it's where wealthy Athenians have their country homes, like West Cork or Kerry). It's not very resorty though, more fishing villages and vast mountains.

If you'd prefer an island based holiday, Mykonos has a rep for being a party island for twentysomethings. Kefalonia is pretty, quite wooded, where they filmed Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Santorini is fairly commercialised, so you might find pubs/clubs if that's what you're after whilst still having a great setting (I think the island itself is either a volcano, or the crater of an eruption).
