    Seen this on another Forum:

Private Airbus A380 To Get A Gold Paint Job

Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud the soon-to-be owner of the first private Airbus A380 is sparing no expense to make his doubledecker toy the most fabulously extravagant jet on the planet. He spent over $300 million on the plane and is currently spending more than half that much money on customizing the jet. As we've mentioned before on this site, the jet will have a whirlpool bath and sauna, a dining room paneled in marble, a gym and a desert-themed fiber-optic mural. The most incredible touch might just be the approximately $58 million he is spending to have the plane painted in gold leaf on the outside. It not only sounds luxurious it also sounds a little dangerous if the sun bounces off it. The plane will be ready in two years, until then, the prince will have to content himself with his current ride, his own 747 jumbo jet.

I think this was one of the very first production examples. Its been sitting in TLS waiting for the refit to "super luxury" standards. He didn't need it immediately. Just looked at a.net and flightblogger....it is MSN002.

About the gold leaf paint job- would gold leaf adhere to the skin at 0.80 Mach? Why not just use gold paint you nutjob? Look at the very fancy gold on GulfAir aircraft....

Another problem re the gold leaf paint job - gold is about 19 time heavier than water. Think what painting the entire surface of an A380 with gold will do to it's W&B!

The thing will hardly be able to get off the ground!

He could fund a concorde return from his back pocket.

If I had that much money, I would do the same thing.

Ah yes, Gold the element, not gold the colour.....

there was some other boyo from hose parts that had a silver Audi a6: silver the element, not silver the colour.

Even paint wears off. That gold will not last two flights intact.

I imagine that weight will not be a consideration considering what a normal A380 can fly carrying.

The finish will look awful after a few flying hours. He would be advised to scrap that idea. Unless he intends that after each flight it is renewed.
