I was in hobbyairsoft on the weekend and I shouldered a g&g l85 and long story short I fell in love! But the problem is it's a love that can't be realised due to the €380 barrier! My question is, are there any other cheaper brands out there and what's the quality like on them?

    Thanks in advance

I've no direct experience with any of them, but I've done some research into the topic. The Star one sounds like it's good kit, steel and heavy, with a plastic gearbox. That might cause some problems if you're trying to give it an unrealistically high rate of fire or something like that, but I didn't encounter much in the line of stories of problems with it. The other potential problem is that it can be a little difficult to get parts for them, but not impossible. It's a little old by now so the price has come down dramatically and I've considered one myself more than once. Eirsoft will be able to get them in as part of their partner programme thinger if you don't fancy importing it yourself - you could ask on their thread for a quote.

I think that's the cheapest there is.

The Ares L85s are pretty good, they have better internals than the old Stars. The Ares are full metal internally, no more plastic gear boxes. They have a more realistic finish than the G&G and correct markings to boot.

I got one of the old Star L85A2s at a clearance price, got it imported and taxed for around €280 and no problems so far. The Ares internals can be dropped in when needed so I'm happy with it.

There is the Army clone L85s that are decent enough. Their A1s were a bit ropey but the A2 seem to be good for a clone and they have electronic blow back like the G&G but it tends to break and you can disable that function.

the G&G ones are savage, the army ones IMO feel flimsy in comparison....

    My 2c?
The Army is a little brittle, but it works fine as long as you don't monster it. Its a fraction of the G&G price. The problem with the L85 is that it limited to what bits you can stick on it.
    I love mine.

Hmm thanks for all the advice. As alvin t gray said you can't stick much on it so I'll have to think about it.....
