Burton to direct Addams Family remake

Somebody call Johnny Depp and HBC!
According to recent reports from Deadline Hollywood, it could be a new stop-motion movie based on Charles Addams’ The Addams Family, which originated as regular cartoons in The New Yorker from the ’30s straight on through to the ’80s when Addams passed away.

Most of us are only familiar with The Addams Family from the ’60s television series and the Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, and Christopher Lloyd movie remakes we saw in the ’90s. Burton supposedly wants to ignore all of those and go right to Addams’ cartoons from the New Yorker and make a much more sharp and witty movie. The project will bring Burton back to the world of stop-motion animation, which he was involved in as a writer/producer on The Nightmare Before Christmas, producer on James and the Giant Peach, and as writer/producer/director on Corpse Bride.

Stupid question alert; what is stop-motion?

I think it gets to a point where you think, "hasn't Tim Burton already remade this film"?

I can see the Addams' Family style easily fitting into Burton's world....another film, another paycheck for Depp and Burton's wife...Helena Bonnam-Carter

I can just imagine the casting process [as Burton leaves the house] :

Burton : I'm off to work dear, back at 10.
HBC : Where are you going?
Burton : Oh, just starting shooting my new film.
    HBC : What is it?
Burton : You wouldn't be interested. It's [insert film name here]
HBC : Great! Hang on, I'll just get my coat.
    Burton : Well actually I don't...(sigh)...ok.

Like Wallace and Gromit or Burtons other ones.....whatwasitcalled? Nightmare Before Christmas. That sort.

I'm not looking forward to this. At all.

    Stuff like this:

Photograph - move slightly -photograph - wash rinse and repeat x a zillion.

Same animation technique used in Wallace and Gromit, the original King Kong, Nightmare Before Christmas etc.
It makes for some pretty cool looking effects, but takes a lot of time, skill and patience to do. It has become something of a lost art since CGI took over.

Stop motion animation, like King Kong (30's version)...Wallace and Gromit, Nightmare before Christmas, Fantastic Mr. Fox... It's a style of animation where you build a puppet/prop; take a picture, move it slightly, take a picture, move it slightly (etc etc) over and over again until it looks like it's moving. Terribly time consuming but pretty cool result.

It gives a clunky awesome motion that is so archaic but just bloody brilliant.

Sigh....lets run down the Tim Burton checklist for this

Johnny Depp as Gomez, a kookier, more oddball version
    HBC as Morticia
    Windy stairs, lots of them
Stripes in every shot, if a character wears stripes while climbing a windy stairs its even better
Trees, mangled looking ones, possible stripy
    More stripes
    Danny Elfman score

I have no problem with directors and actors having a working relationship, Scorcese/DiCaprio , James Cameron and Bill Paxton, Spielberg/Hanks etc etc, but its just soooo boring now with Depp and Burton and HBC, every fcuking movie he makes as one or both of them in it, all playing essentially the same character, I enjoyed Sweeney Todd as it wasnt so kooky (aside from the beach dream, that had Burton stamped all over it) but am sick to death of Burtons vision of things, thank Christ he never got his mitts on Superman, itd be like Kevin Smith joked about, he would have given him scissors for hands or something

Yea, like everyone else pretty much tired of the whole Burton/Depp/HBC triangle as well. Admittedly they have done some good work. I did enjoy Corpse Bride actually. But Sweeney Todd and AiW were disappointing. Maybe it will be ok, but Im keeping expectations to a minimum.

Is anything safe from this man??
Here we go again, another adolescent emo wet dream from Burton!!

The only thing I ever enjoyed from Burton/Depp was 'Ed Wood', which happends to be a masterpiece.

I enjoyed Big Fish as well, as its got Burto-esque elements but its not as bad as some of his later ones, I do enjoy some of his movies , Batman, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, I genuinely like them, but just tired of him rehashing the same old cliched look for his movies, can you imagine if he remakes something like The Wizard of Oz?

He'd never be able to make it as dark and creepy as "Return to Oz" :)

    Indeed, the Wheelers? *shudders*

Oz could do with a darker vision, people will say its sacrilige to remake it but the Garland version is a remake as well so its ripe for a retelling, just as long as its not Burton, David Fincher's Wizard of Oz, now that I'd pay to see:D

Heh, was wondering how much darker Oz could be. :pac: Though maybe some "cool" clothes could manage it. :P

Sounds promising. Addams Family is definitely ideal for Burton.

I really don't get Burton. He starts of great with Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, two fo my favourite films as a kid. Then what does he do? Doesn't direct and original concept for 20 years (Corpse Bride, doesn't count, not a film IMO, more an epilogue to Nightmare which, again, doesn't count, he didn't direct)

He really is just lazy. He has sacrificed artistic creativity in favour of of mindless rehashes. It's funny to look at his post 1990 career, he contributed in such a huge way to the giant increase in remakes over the last two decades. Somehow he managed to constantly tackle precious texts yet get great returns on them and therefore encourage the Hollywood remake train.

Addams Family...same as Charlie and The Chocolate Factory...Tim, sometimes, the loose adaptations that stray from the source material, did so for a f**king reason. Now, please just focus your efforts on the "really could be good" Frankenweenie.
