02 Avensis hard to start

I have an 02 Avensis D4D which has been reliable up to now. However recently it is hard to start if the engine is hot. You can start in the morning at the first turn but if you stop at a shop on the way to work it seems to turn for ages before it will start again. This problem seems to be getting worse and now if you need to stop somewhere it is easier to leave the car running rather than switching it off. Has anyone had this problem before or any idea what could be wrong?

you should get it checked out it will get worse, its either the pressure regulator on the fuel rail or the starter motor- filings stick to the commutator and cause a slight drag which causes your start rpm to be off slightly ie. if it needs to turn over at 300 rpm and its at 296 it wont start especially when hot

I agree with PADRAIC there, the fuel reguators on the pump do give problems, but so too do the pressure rails, and even the glow plugs can cause running problems. The most recent D4D I had in had the same running issues, and thre up a load of red herring fault codes that sent us of testing totally the wrong sensors. Turned out to be a set of glow plugs solved the problem, you can get a set for between 100 and 120.
Best to have a diagnostic run on the engine managment ECU to start off with.

Thanks for the advice. Would I be better to go to the the main dealer to get it checked?

I dunno if you got this sorted. I had a similar issue with my avensis. Started around xmas, and got contnually worse. I found that bump starting always worked, so after further investigation I found the contacts on the started solenoid were heavily corroded. Took me a few hours to get the starter out, but after cleaning I've not had an issue....

At a wild guess your a mechanic? working on cars is second nature to some of us, but there are many people out there who would find even the simple jobs hard to do.

lol it will be next time, I had to work out the removal method. There wasnt much space so I was being careful. I went up instead of down as I dont have a lift and I don't like working under jacks...
