Pumped storage is such a good way to store power from intermittent renewable power sources that Riverbank invests in massive expensive underground storage tanks with billions of gallons of water.

one of the best kept secrets”
    - Energy Secretary Dr. Steven Chu [Sept 2009]

"astoundingly efficient… In this future world where we want renewables to get 20, 30, 50 percent of our electricity generation, you need pumped hydro storage. It's an incredible opportunity and it's actually the lowest cost clean energy option. So I will do my best to make that known to the United States. And directly under our control in the DOE we will be pushing this.”

Seems it can make financial sense to build these massive installations.

Pumped storage is great, and its just a matter of identifying areas which are suitable for it.

Perhaps a combination of wind energy and pumped storage is a good match, which would give wind energy more reliability and dependability.
