My Dental Story

For years I was very unhappy with my teeth. I had saved up alot of money and had decided to get cosmetic work done. I began research into costs and being impressed by the prices of dentistry abroad I went to Budapest to check it out.

To put it short, it was a bad experience. The clinic was above a car showroom out in the middle of nowhere. I felt that the dentists wanted to reel me in and spit me out as they claimed that i could have a perfect set of knashers in the space of two weeks. Straight away I began to question if a high quality finish could be achieved in such a short time and what if they overlooked any hidden anomolies. I got a bad feeling about the whole thing and more or less ran out of the clinic as quick as I could. After going home I began to do more research and even with the help of the dental forums here it became clear that if you wanted a good dental job one must invest alot of time and money into it. And rightly so as it is something that must live with for a long time.

As it happened I ended up living in Germany and found a dentist there. The cosmetic work took 6-8 months and is still ongoing here and there. Turned out my front teeth had alot of little hidden disasters like cysts, a tiny broken front root and a rotton root amongst other things, none of which were mentioned as work to be carried out at my x-ray in Budapest. Obviuosly these teeth would need treatment in order to carry the crowns and I fear that this may have been overlooked in Budapest resulting in remedial work. Me and my dentist put alot of time and effort into getting everything perfect and I am 100% happy with the result. No doubt it cost more but I rather spend more money on getting it done right than spending money on a quick fix botch job.

Basically what I want to tell people is that if you want an amazing smile there is no quick fix solution. After choosing a dentist/prosthodontist that they are confident with, one has to go on a long journey to get the best result. A relationship is built up between you and your dentist not for two weeks but probably for a few years or even more. So going abroad to get work done is probably not conducive to creating this partnership or resulting it the best outcome. Consider your cosmetic work as an investment for life and I wish everyone who is taking the big step of cosmetic work the best of luck.

I am glad that your treatment worked out very well. More and more patients are going to Eastern Europe for dental work and having lots of work done. The outcome if often very good and to a high standard but many times it is not. I know that some people will have poor dental work done in Ireland but and many dentists I know are reporting seeing more and more patients who have had a lot of work done abroad and need much of it repaired.

I think someone who may need a few crowns or an implant or two are going abroad and having a lot more treatment done thinking that it is saving them money in the long run. For many that is not the case. Bad dental work can become very expensive. As you have seen, it takes a lot of time and investment from both the patient and the dentist to get a high quality outcome.
