Google Earth Altitudes

Hi, Was wondering recently if anyone knows how accurate the altitudes given when you hold the cursor over a spot on google earth are? Not even sure if this is on topic for geography but if anyone knows . . .?

I just checked an area near where i live that i measured the correct altitude with a GPS awhile back and I'm getting a difference of about 40m.

I think Google Earth is great to look at but the reliability of the data there isn't be considered accurate for anything important.

Somebody may be able to give a more accurate answer than this
