Could I get advise from people on the best ways to get the local river cleaned up ? Its a small section at the main entrance into the village of Termonfeckin, its such a shame really as it just looks dreadfull. I have no idea how the pipes got there, but all it does is collect rubish, then with heavy rains it gets washed into the sea. The river its self is either called Termonfeckin river by the EPA and some call it Ballywater river !

Who do I get in touch with local county council ? TD? tidy towns ? And best way to get results. Any info at all will be great.

It would be the responsibility of Louth County Council I would imagine - I suggest contacting them first.

Suggest you could also contact the Irish Wildlife Trust as they have a lot of experience in this area.

Sadly your photographs are typical of many a river throughout the country and it's down to the local authorities. There has been a cooker (?) in the middle of the River Slaney at Enniscorthy for years now - a water feature? Perhaps a Little Egret may take up residence on it. :)

Funny you say that, up river there are some Egrets, but a grey Heron uses that place to fish, I think he knows I am out to photo him as well. I could walk over that bridge 10 times a day without my camera and he will be fishing there, I walk across with my camera... he legs it !

On topic, thanks for the replies, I did send an email to Louth co.co, but it appears I made a mistake already, having addressed it "To Whom it Concerns", I should have put "To Louth County Manager", reason being is that, I am dealing with the public sector therefore "To Whom" isn't directed at someone so it just lays in some inbox on the PS network. Already I can tell this is going to be a long red trape affair.

*goes off to send it again !

I cant help but think that organising a local clean up would be a much better way of trying to get a long term solution to this one. Your timing is just perfect - your local authority could provide assistance with skips etc under the national spring clean scheme. All you have to do is organise a few volunteers to do the work and maby expand it into a wider community clean up. Put up a few signs in the area, gather a large low key crowd in high visability jackets on a saturday morning and get stuck in. It would send out a very clear message to the people who dumped the rubbish that the local community do care about this river & their local area and they are prepared to stand up and do something about the mess. It might make people think twice about dumping in the same place in the future plus it might instill a bit of local community spirit.

Might give this ago as well, seeing as they are offering : "Your Local Authority (council) may be able to provide you with extra materials when you contact them with details of your event."

The packs they send I'm guessing are bags of simlar size to bin bags. Not much use as these are fairly large pipes + other rubbish.

Thanks for the info. I'll get in touch with them as well.
