afternoon, I have moved over (lock stock) from London. I brought my car over with me but am currently not driving it over here. My UK car tax has expired, I assume I need to tax it over here, they scrap cars without tax back home i think. My car insurance with Elephant covers me for 3 trips of 30 days a time a year, so I suppose I need to sort that aswell, any recommendations for car insurance?

Having moved over you should be able to re-register your car for free,,,not sure if you can do it retrospectifly though. See the Customs and Excise website (VRO section for full details)

You have to have owned your car for a period in uk & be able to prove that you are moving from being a uk resident to an Irish resident in order to be able to get it reg'd without paying vrt. Get it sorted asap. In fact, you should get irish insurance straight away (even on the uk reg) as your uk company might not cover you if they figure you are permanently over here.

Not necesseraly, OP what age are you? I know all the older people in my family use the AA and come renewal time, they match any better quotes. Older mature drivers don't pay that much for insurance

They may not pay much for here. But the OP will definitely be paying way more then before.*

Insurance is only relative to age. I was just added to my mothers Insurance last night for €24 for 12 months.

You are exempt if you own the car more than 6 months in another country and CAN PROVE IT!

Or they're very young and the car is (relatively) powerful. Insurance can be torturously painful in the UK in some cases.

When I lived in the UK for a year I couldn't get insurance anywhere near as cheap as here. Most were around 500 to 1000 pounds more than I was paying in euro here at the time. I ended up paying around 900 pounds having being paying around 700 euro here at that time.

thanks for replies, I know that insurance is going to hurt over here - fully comp on my astra estate at home is under £300...

Thanks for the links provided also :)

You can pay little and get a thin policy with little benefits or you can go to Hibernian Aviva and get very good insurance. Get your house insured with them and get a discount.
