Made mistake selling car

Just sold my car today and made the mistake of giving the tax book to the buyer, he told me he could tax the car quicker if he showed it in the tax office so I agreed, didn't think much of it.

Then my dad told me that he may never transfer the tax and collect speed tickets etc in my name.

What can I do, can I ring the tax centre in shannon and tell them to let me know when ownership transfer is complete?

Ring the buyer and tell him that if the ownership is not transferred within 10 days (or 2 weeks or whatever you think is appropriate), you will be applying for a duplicate VLC and complete the ownership transfer yourself.

Don't you need 2 signatures to transfer ownership?

Yes OP probably signed his signature and handed it over to buyer.

Just ring the buyer and try and get it sorted..provided that you have his number.

What you can do is go to a solicitor and get a letter to state when you sold the car, this will only cost about 15 - 20 Euro. I did the same myself a couple of years ago. They will be familiar with this BTW !
I also got a letter from NTR about an unpaid toll, I phoned and told them I had sold the car and then I heard no more. Don't worry you will not be liable for fines etc as you have sold the car. Just go to the solicitor on Monday ! Best of luck !

How are you supposed to prove that you sold the car?

If they don't believe you, tell them they are welcome to seize it :D

Sorry, wasn't very clear, the letter is an affidavit. Meant to say too that you must send it to Dept of Transport in Shannon with a cover letter explaining what happened and details of your car, name, address and who you sold it to, along with their address. I suggest you register the letter as proof of sending.

And don't delay. I think it is actually a criminal offence not to register the new owner when you sell a car.

give the guy a chance, he might be genuine, and do the transfer of ownership straight away..... just call shannon and see if it's still in your name after a few days, if it is they can tell you

Have you got any of his/her details, name /address/phone
If you have as suggested above contact new owner and tell them you made an error and you'll be informing your local car tax office.. good luck..
