I can come out with some crazy stuff now and again but recently I seen a shocking statistic for the amount of cats and dogs put down every year.

Could they not be released to the wild? I would imagine they could be a threat to humans then but it turns my stomach to see that stats that thousands are put down.

My friend had a good laugh at me when I suggested it to him after reading out the stat. What do you guys think?

Releasing pet dogs and cats in the wild is doing no-one any favours. Least of all the poor animals.

Aren't most of those cats and dogs put down because they're rescued from the wild in the first place - and can't be rehomed?

No, they're domesticated. It would be like releasing a 10 year old into the wild.

    :p

Seriously though the figure was tens of thousands combined! That's a shocking stat. Neutering is the best solution but if they cant be re-homed and they are healthy its terrible to put them down.

Actually, the best way to control the population of stray animals is to neuter them and release them back out in to the parks or streets. Cats and dogs are very territorial and that is the best method to control the population of a given area. Whether the animal is neutered or not won't affect how that animal protects their turf, but at the same time they will follow their instincts and fight off other cats or dogs who try move in on their territory.

Yeah, release them into the wild.....then we could have packs of dogs roaming the streets attacking people like they have in Russia.

Being a stray is not from the wild.

    OP, terrible Idea.

The choice is put them down, with little or no pain...or release them into the wild where they can't survive, to be either hit by cars, or killed by something bigger.

    Animal Welfare forum, OP.

And btw, releasing them into the wild would just create more animals with no homes.
