Avensis estate v Skoda Octavia Estate

    Hey guys

I am posting this on behalf of a mate. He is looking into getting a diesel estate around 2005 range so abour 10k - 11k range I suppose.

He needs the estate as he surfs a lot and cycles a lot so will use the space in the back. He would travel a lot at the weekends so it must be good on fuel and have a decent enough performance.

He is looking at the d4d Avenisis 2.0 estate. I heard it is not as economical as the VAG tdi? So I told him to look into the octavia. I think a newer one came out in 2005.

What do ye think? Does anyone have one? An estate that is?

Is there any other estate people would think suits his requirements?

    Thanks in advance

I would put those at the bottom of the list but then I just hate avensis & not a fan of the Octavia styling either.

I have a '07 avensis estate d4d (rocket ;) ). I have put up 50k miles on it with no trouble. I imported mine from Toyota in the UK as a demo car as there were very few diesel estates in ireland at the time (expect its probably the same now).

Althought the steering is a tad light, I find the road holding excellent. I get about 52mpg from an extra urban cycle

The only complaint I have is that VAG drivers always feel the need to overtake - usually with clouds of blue smoke :P !

At the time of buying, I test drove:
    - a bmw 320d and found it rather poor on road holding, a bit cramped inside.
    - honda accord, but didnt like the rear end of the estates (which sags)
    - a few MPVs (all of which I hated for the body roll - worse than a '65 cortina :p)

He is spending 10 to 11k. HE can buy many 05 models for that money. Why settle for the most boring cars out there

I agree, like a broken record but if I turn just one person away from an avensis or encourage one person to look around at all thats available, my work here is done.

i'd have him look in the uk at a vectra. They are huge for an estate and decent 1.9tdi engine with 150bhp. Design spec is good, elite even better, sri has the sporty look.

How about a Primera 2.2 deisel estate. Huge, buckets of zip, apparently fairly economical, and very smooth suspension. Also a good reputation for reliability. The seats might take a bit of getting used to though - that's why I don't have one, my back just couldn't take it, but that's probably just me.
