Waiting for insurance, can I drive?

I recently got a car and before I drove it, I called up Aviva and got insurance on it with them. They gave me a reference number for the insurance and told me I'm insured to drive on the car. I checked my account and they've even taken the money for the premium from it too.

Now this was last thursday and I still haven't got the letter with the insurance disc and stuff from them yet. So can I drive my car around? And if so then what do I say if I get stopped?

P.S. I haven't got back the new vehicle license certificate in my name yet either. So do you guys know generally how long does it take for the license certificate to come?
