Weighty issues!

    OK where to start. Turning 52 this year and have gone through the menopause with relative ease. I used to be involved in dancing but retired from it a few years ago. Since 2006 I have been slowly putting up weight and now I wear size 18 clothes. I have never been a size 18 in my life and it really shows.

    There have been things happening in my life that have caused me to comfort eat and I have taken a liking to eating food, even when I am not hungry. If something is there in the kitchen that I fancy, I will go for it. Just before a few minutes before I wrote this, I have eaten a packet of cheese puffs and had at least 4 potato waffles with bread. Yes I know it is bad, but I could not stop myself.

    I just do not know when to stop and am afraid that my weight will get worse. I am tired a lot and sleep sometimes in the afternoon. I just lack the energy to get up and do something about my weight. The fact that I know I can lose the weight, actually hinders me. I won't do it because I know I can. I know it seems bad, but that is how I feel.

    I am not making much money to join gyms and stuff. Did try the weight watchers club but found it not suitable for me. I really do not know what else to do, but I do know that I want to lose this weight and feel better about myself and need to do it for me. But I just lack the energy and drive to do it.

    Has anyone gone through the same thing? I find it hard to talk to other friends as most are either larger than me or same weight, so it is not something I can discuss with them. Have you any ideas that you could share with me?


    Oh and for your info, I have been to the doctor and asked him about dieting, I was just given a diet sheet but that is about it. So if you can share your ideas etc,. I would be so interested to hear from you.

    hi op,

    I struggle with my weight as well, I've been everything from a size 8 to a size 16. I wish there was an easy answer but the only thing that works for me is weight watchers. I am a size 12 at the moment and need to go back as I just eat myself up without their weekly meetings I would keep going indefinitely I'm sure.

    To stay at a size 10 I literally need to consume no more than 18 points a day, so I am facing a lifetime of starvation, oops I mean dicipline! lol But I know what you mean you can't discuss it with your heavier friends...

    I was wondering why WW did not suit your before? There is really no way but the hard way.. I excersise 3 times a week as well and work hard at it but I find it makes little difference to weight itself.

    Was also wondering why you stopped the dancing...

    I notice the foods you mentioned are all heavy carbs, that can be an attempt by the brain to boost mood. Carbs would give you a short term dopameine boost, but followed by a crash that can start the cycle again....

    1) Check out the fitness/nutritution forums and their stickies for information.
    People there have been through similar situations.

    2) Various podcasts like www.fat2fitradio.com

    3) Losing weight is simply and straightforward. However that does not mean it is easy. Accept that there is no quick fix. Its going to take time but you will get there.

    4) Use as many sources of information as you can and figure out what works for you.

    Well, the place to stop the food is when you shop.

    First, never shop hungry.

    Second, make a list before you go and stick with it.

    Third, on that list should only be foods you need to prepare (as well as fruits and veg). Not even bread for you. The reason is because anything pre-made is way too easy to grab a second/third helping of. Of course you can overeat with cooked stuff as well, but it's a damper on impulse control.

    For example, for breakfast you should by oats. That way you cook a bowl of porridge and eat it. You can't then just grab another bowl and shove it in your mouth - you have to go through the whole process of making it again.

    And if you start eating a bowl of porridge for breakfast instead of toast, potato waffles, and a bag of crisps, you'll easily save enough money to join a gym.
