i've been thinking about getting a vo2 max test done. i only started doing tri last year and would like to give it a good go this year and i'd like to find acurate training zones as i feel like i'm wasting too many training sessions with no structure.

has anyone else had this done and was it worth it. i see irishfit.ie are doing a fairly comprehensive package for €150 which doesnt sound too bad or is there anywhere near sligo that does it.

    thanks
    P

Why are you getting a vo2max test done?
What do you hope to get from it?
How do think it will aid your training?
Why do you think vo2max testing is relevant to triathlon?
And finally why do you think a lab test better than a repeatible field test?

cos all the cool kids have it:D:D

as i said i only started this lastyear and i'd like accurate zones to train in to try to get the most from my training. i haven't decided to get it done yet, thats why i'm asking for advice here to see if its worth doing.

from what i've seen in the mags and triathletes training bible it appears to be a more accurate gauge of where you are at in your training and where you need to be going to bring it to the next level.

    cheers

You can get it done in Trinity in the anatomy dept for €60. They do it on the bike or on the treadmill. They also do blood tests, included in the price. €150 seems a demented price to me.
Would def recommend getting it done.

Do they do gas analysis in Trinity?

If you only started last year I recommend some field tests that will give some good training zones. A 30 minute bike TT with the average heart rate for the last 20 minutes as your "threshold" heart rate (LT2). Same for run. Repeatible, just as good as a lab test for the OPs needs and free.

Too many people get lab tests done because it's percevied to be the done thing or their "coach" told them too.
