    Hi,
I am just beginning to build my home. I recently got planning.
Could you experts out there please advise me on the following:

    1. I intend to use 50-100mm floor insulation, and one line of quinn lite blocks on inner leaf to reduce thermal bridge from foundation to walls. Is this a good idea and is 50-100mm floor insulation sufficient
    2. I intend to use 80-100mm aeroboard platinum insulation in cavity and leave 50mm air gap, is 80-100mm insulation enough? is there a better product on the market besides aeroboard. for some reason i am not a big fan of xtratherm or kingspan, my engineer recommended aeroboard.
    3. How should i close the cavity to minimise thermal bridgeing.
    4. I intend to use rads of a condensing oil boiler for heating, and install a Heat Recovery system, would you guys recommend the installation of Heat Recovery system? do i still have to install something green like solar panels??

please feel free to answer my questions and offer advice from your own builds.

    Thanks.

You are not ready to start building yet. All of the above and a hell of a lot more need to be decided upon before you start to build, imo.

You need to sit down with an energy assesor and discuss your build and your options. Your site should influence your design and your design and orientation will influence your choice of renewables to use. The buildings insulations should be decided between the building designer and the energy assesor, imo.

Aeroboard or other slab like insulation products allow cold air to circulate in the cavity and so you don't get the full U value of the product. Its called termal looping I think. A bonded bead system pumped into the cavity is much better as it completly fills the cavity. I have been recommonded to use a 150 mm cavity filled with envirobead it will give a U value of 0.20.
