    2000 A4 1.6SE ARM Engine

This is the fault code i get when i Scan with VagCom.

    00533 - Idle Speed Regulation
00533 - Idle Speed Regulation: Adaptation Limit (Add) Exceeded

    Possible Symptoms
    Bad Fuel Economy
    Possible Causes

Air Leak between Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor and Engine
    Injector(s) faulty
    Fuel Pressure Regulator faulty
    Throttle Body faulty
    Intake Air Filter dirty

    Possible Solutions
    Perform Throttle Body Adaptation
Check Hoses and Pipes to/between Components
    Check Intake Air Filter
    Check Fuel Pressure Regulator
Check Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
    Check Injector(s)

when i gear down the revs drop to about 300 revs. unless i blip the throttle at the right time the car dies.

ive had the crankcase breather pipe, and air filter replaced. when the breather pipe was replaced it made the problem a hell of a lot worse. cuts out about 10 times on a 10 minute drive

Has anyone here had experience with them

Sounds like it could be that the MAF is knackered?

I would'nt go buying maf's just yet. Get a smoke test done to ensure there are no air leaks. If every thing is okay(which I guess is not)then they can readapt the throttle body.

is there any way of readapting the throttle without bring it to a garage?

strapped for cash. if i wasnt id just go to the dealer and let them do whatever they want

when i disconnect the MAF it gets a lot worse.also, it shows no faults for the MAF so a few people have said its very unlikely to be faulty

Have you tried cleaning the throttle body (or is this what they mean by adapting)? I had a similar problem of revs dropping (non Audi) and it worked wonders. Done it myself in-situ with a can of carb cleaner, lint-free cloth and cotton buds.

i say you still have an air leak from the positive crankcase ventalation (PCV) pipes. they are made of hard plastic and crack with age. replace them all, even the one that connects to the bottom of the engine block.
