"Independant" Mature student grant query, please help!

    Hi all,

I am currently at a bit of a loss as to what I need to do regarding maintenance grant.

I am 25, and am going back to college in September this year as a mature student. I previously attended an undergraduate course in 03-06, but never completed it (I received a grant for 2 years). This time around I believe I am classified as an "independent" mature student.

However, my situation is a little complicated: I was living in my family home up until last month, when I had a bust-up with my parents. An aunt of mine who requires help kindly took me in, and I look after the house/her in exchange for a room. I work a full time job too.

What are the criteria for applying as an indpendent mature maintenance grant candidate? What gets assessed? Do you have to have been living outside the home for a specific amount of time before being eligible? Presumably no-one else's finances but mine are looked at (This is where I would have a problem, getting a picture of my aunt's finances is not possible at all)? Are proof of rent contributions etc asked for?

I would really appreciate the advice of someone who has been through the process/who knows what the considerations are.

    Thanks

    M

    Hi there.

As far as I know the VEC take into account your residency and income from Sept 2008 to August 2009 for courses beginning 2010. This mean you will need proof of income from your parents for that year.

As you were resident in your parents' house, their income and yours will count towards whether you are eligible for funding.

My advice is to go and see your VEC grants officer before they get busy. Also have a look at www.studentfinance.ie as it is very helpful.

    Hope this helps.

    AJ
