Holiday in Hawaii

Hi, i'm thinking of going to hawaii next month for 2 weeks. However, i'm getting totally confused with what to do and the whole island hopping thing.

My question is; has anyone been there and if so, what did you do there? was it more of a hassle to go island hopping? i've heard that the big island and Oahu are both very commercialised and may not be ideal for sightseeing.

I would love to hear from someone that has some experience of Hawaii and could give me some advice.

    Thanks

    Hi there,
I cant speak about all the Hawaiian islands, but myself and my boyfriend went to Maui for a week about 9 years ago and I've been dying to go back ever since. We got direct flights from US west coast to Maui.

It was the most amazing week, such a beautiful island, very chilled. One drawback was most bars closed around 10pm where we were in Lahaina, so not a great place if you are looking for nightlife. We explored the island on the back of a Harley and found the most beautiful places off the beaten track.

We stayed in a very reasonable hotel and visited the fancier resorts/golf resort to see how the other half live.

No matter how your holiday works out I highly reccommend spending time in Maui...

Stayed in the Hilton on wakiki beach about 7 years ago. Nice location plenty of nice bars, restaurants, shops etc plus pearl harbour is a must. Didn't do much more myself well it was my honeymoon;)

Was in Oahu last year. Waikiki beach area is pretty commercialised. Honolulu has some very nice areas and the north and east of the island has some beautiful beaches and rainforests

I done the island hopping, ended up having to spend a night in Oahu because they messed up our flights, not a very good experience tbh. Was meant to have a direct flight from Maui to Kaui but for some reason it landed in Oahu and they told us we had missed our connection, even though we were never meant to have one. We were then left waiting on standby for later flights but they wouldn't tell us if the chances of getting a seat were good or not. Few hours later it was evident we wouldn't get on standby, so they sent us to a hotel, only for the hotel to send us back because they don't work with the airline. They then sent us to a second hotel and we ended up in a poor motel room right under a freeway. Lost a whole day of our holiday to that.

But apart from that it was a good trip, Hawaii has lots to offer, I'll paste from another post: Big Island has the active volcano, you can go to the top of Mauna Kea where all the observatories are and do a star tour, really cool and interesing, the island is also home to Kona coffee smile.gif. Maui has some decent beaches, good surfing and the road to Hana is a great road trip through the rain forest. Kauai is quiet and relaxed and has some great scenery and treks that you can do and then you have Oahu for partying.

you should probably check out www.alohaholidays.ie, an Irish tour op specialising in Hawaii. They sorted us out on a fab holiday last year to Hawaii and Las Vegas. Lots of info about the islands on the site too. Also www.gohawaii.com, the official tourist website.
