Just wondering what people's recommendations in town would be for someone looking just to get a good dinner for under €10 in town, or even as cheap as possible.

    Finnegans.
    O'Riordans.

    Reasonably sensible dinners.

    Finnegan's is overrated muck.

Tried it loads of times. The veg is always dry as they seem to microwave everything.

    Never eating there again.

To answer the question, I don't thing there is such a thing as a good dinner in this country for under 10 euro. You can get food for under 10 euro but not an actual dinner.

    Charcoal. ;)

Kettle of fish is daycent enough for cheap eats.
Failing that just go to Mickey D's and splash out on a Mc. Flurry for dessert.

Something sustainable now! Charcoals should only be eaten after clubs.

I hope nobody suggests Street Wok... overpriced muck.

The Market kitchen is a sandwich and salad place. That's pretty decent for under a tenner. It's only lunch I guess but it's good quality.
Are Boogaloo burger still doing their burger + beer for a tenner?

I had chicken satay noodles there 2 weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. 7 notes and a large portion of tasty noodles. It's at the more acceptable end of fast food and doesn't pretend to be more than that.

I was loathe to go in there based on people on Boards slagging them off but it worked out for me.

The Townhouse is very good for a reasonably cheap meal.

Da Tang Noodle House is good - but I think it may be a shade over a tenner. They do good lunch time specials for under a tenner, but I'm presuming you're looking for a night time meal.... sorry but I think Galway is very over priced and the quality isn't very good.

The Dáil have food around a tenner, but under a tenner is usually the veggie option (which is hit and miss). Their chowder and a side salad comes in at around a tenner, and often serves me as my dinner!

    bethlehem ftw!

If you're on the east side of the city, you can get a massive lovely bowl of soup and a couple of thick slices of wheaten bread at the wild nettle cafe in the briarhill business park (above hip kids) for a fiver.

They have bigger meals for a tenner but the soup... omg.

    It's seriously nice.

McSwiggan's do a decent lunch menu and most if not all the options are under a tenner. Had a Pasta and chorizo sausage dish and was very good, large portion to so felt it was good value for the money. They sometimes do voucher's on their website too, had a 50% off lunch time offer a while back.

The bistro over Barr An Challadh (spelling? schmelling!) in Woodquay has re-opened under new management.

I had a very nice mini-breakfast for a fiver (inc coffee). Mains are between 8.50 and 10 I think. They close at 6, so it's more of a daytime dinner place though.

The italian place on quay street opposite the quays, called il foreggini or something like that, do an early bird for 14.95. Two courses and a beer or wine. Good value. Great food.

Homeplate, La Salsa and Kellys are where I'd go for a cheap, filling meal. Homeplate is great for soup, you can get a big bowl and a massive sandwich for around €7.

How is €14.95 less than €10 ?

Milanos do some good food. You can get two mains for €15 with vouchers from their website.

Polo ad Astra is my recommendation :D

was there just after it opened. wasnt great imo especially if you were getting the burger+beer offer. burgers were a tenner and up

Quarter pounder with cheese meal in la salsa for 6.50 is alot better.

Forgot about Master Lees Chinese on Bridge St.
They have specials every day, but My friend had Tofu Tiannamen noodles for 6.95 today and it was HUGE. They used to have a surprisingly welcoming decor in the middle of chaos, but I think their latenight boozola traffic hammered the daintiness out of the place. It's not big on atmosphere, but big portions, tasty and the staff are lovely.

    Had dinner this evening in The Spud House;

    Student Special = €9
Starter (Soup, Garlic Bread or Garlic and Cheese Bread)
Main (Any baken potato from the menu, with side salad)
    Mineral (usual choice)

Great food, good price and I was full leaving! Oh and for you non-students, they never check for ID. ;)

hmm. Maybe I misinterpreted that statement.

I was in The Cellar on Thursday where they had a "2 course meal for less than €10" offer. Starter of chicken and sweet potato soup with brown bread (delicious and filling) and a main of salmon on rice with mixed peppers, veg and yogurt -nicest dinner I've had in a long time! The pint of Mi Wadi orange cost an extra €1 but all in all I thought it was great value, definitely going back for more!

vina mara do a nice 10 euro lunch. They give you some nice bread & tea/coffee also.

Nowhere that charges €1 for Mi Wadi should be associated with the word value!

EDIT: And just to do the maths on that....

    1L MiWadi Orange costs €1.74 on tesco.ie

You're meant to mix 1 part to 4 parts water (ref).
.... so a "Pint of MiWadi" has 20% MiWadi or 113.6ml. (=568*0.2) < assuming no ice! In reality it'd be much less.

That means they're getting 8.8pints out of the 1L bottle..
...or over €7 profit on a €1.74 bottle.

20cent per pint of MiWadi would more than cover the cost, even up it to 40cent for 100% profit... but €1 is robbery.

Yes yes, too much time on my hands!! ;)

Ah the age old 'what to pay for a miwadi or blackcurrant' question. I used to drink a lot of the stuff when I was SOOO broke, but still wanted to go listen to music. I have been charged as much as a POUND fifty for one back in the day!

I am pretty much grand with a euro. I *know* how much mark up there is, but I feel the same about eating out at restaurants. Haggling for any less than a euro feels a daft (to me). I feel that if you buy a couple of pints of beer or shorts, and yours is a miwadi, then *absolutely* it should be free, as at very least, they should assume you are designated driver or whatever.

I'd give it free with food too myself, but I guess that could go either way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,728 ✭✭✭Col200sx

It's a disgrace that anywhere charges €1 for a pint of dilute drink.

For the record the Skeff do a fantastic carvery for less than a tenner, and they leave glasses of water on trays at the bars for you to top up your own glass with blackcurrant, orange and lime.

Very good value lunch for less than a tenner:)

A couple of sushi rolls or a salad or bento box from Cafe Wa are all under a tenner and are lovely :)

Lynch's upstairs above Zhivago on Shop St. Ask for a 15% discount "VIP Card" and you can use it any time except during lunch. Usually get a decent plate of sausages and chips for about €4.50, but their full dinners are usually around €7 (not including the aforementioned discount!). I haven't had a bad meal there yet.

Don't go just at the end of service time... they reheat the dinner in the microwave and still charge you full whack... I kid you not.

Twenty shots of vodka in a bottle. Maybe you should only pay 5% of the cost of the bottle, say €1 for a shot. Doesn't happen, same principle applies here, it's called business

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

profit on a shot of vodka is still less than on a splash of blackcurrant when they're charging a euro.

Ah well - I just remember which pubs charge me, especially when I'm obviously the DD... and I don't go back :D

College bar in NUI, no one will ask for ID. Amazing dinners for 7 squid

I have to give my vote to Renzo Café in Eyre St. It's not open past 6 AFAIK but it has to be the best café in town, I've become addicted to it the last few weeks!

They do really good deals, soup and toasted sandwich for 6.50, big hunk o'cake and coffee for 4...and their cake is home made and delicious, chocolate fudge, coffee walnut, lemon, oh I love cake, and it has been hard to find in recent times:)

It's always packed out though, and my ould fave Sam Baileys seems mighty empty these days...has it gone downhill?

But... they take it from the carvery and slap it on the plate in front of your eyes. No schneaky microwave-shenanigans that I see...?

Finnegans near CP's are good esp for breakfeast, porrige, toast & coffee (with free refils) for under €5. Lunch deals for €6-9, and they don't charge for MiWadi. Riordans have the same menu, I think Finnegans have a better atmosphere.
