Was having a conversation today and someone asked "What 1 bit of advise would you give someone learning to drive" Now what they meant was apart frm get lessons and don't speed, What 1 line of advice would you give someone hitting the roads early in the driving life?

Mine was "Obversation - Always look where your going, where you come from and where other could pull / jump out from"

    Any others?

Don't let other drivers upset and intimidate you. When some people see L-Plates they can get a bit upset and don't show much patience! Don't sink to their level and keep a calm head! ;)

Try and enjoy it. It's a new experience. And always be willing to learn! :D

When something frightens you on the road dont panic and cover your eyes with your hands (i've seen a girl do this!)

    1. Defensive driving. Assume everyone else on the road (especially cyclists:D) is an idiot and will do something that is completely unpredictable at any minute.

    2. Every time you make a mistake, recognise that you have and decide how you are going to avoid doing so in future. Talk to yourself and say "You made a b*****s of that!"

    3. Be patient with other road users. They might also have simply made a mistake or misjudged a situation. Leaning on the horn and gesturing may be satisfying but it doesn't change anything. People in glass houses etc etc....

    4. The old lady in the Micra may be a pain in the arse, but that little car may be her only way of getting to the shops or the doctor. Give her a bit of space, because one day you might be in her place.

    5. Put some zip in your driving. Avoid hesitation, indicate well in advance, make your intentions clear to other road users.

    6. Mirrors are not there for doing your hair or make-up. Use them all the time so that you know where everyone else on your bit of road is and what they're doing.

    7. Make sure that you are always in the right gear for where you are. Brakes are for stopping the car, gears are for driving it not for slowing down, but that doesn't mean that you have to end up in fifth at the roundabout. Go down through the gears and don't coast.

    8. When coming up behind an HGV bear in mind the rule -- "If you can't see my wing mirrors, I can't see you". You won't win any contests with a 44 tonne artic.

    9. Never, ever tailgate. It's an Irish habit that should have long ago been stamped out by good driving lessons. It is dangerous and very distracting for the tailgated driver. Get it into your mind that if he has to emergency brake and you hit him, you are automatically liable irrespective of his reason for braking.

    10. Fast driving is what most of us like to do sometimes. The flash of the hedges or buildings in our periphical vision is exhilirating. You have control. Michael Schumacher look out! Trouble is, you ain't Michael Schumacher and you ain't on an F1 circuit. Drive according to the road conditions as best as you can identify them.

    11. Speed limits are a pain and often seem bizaarre. Often they are, but bear in mind that they were not set for an expert driver like you, but for the old lady in her Micra and the inexperienced (Oh not you) newly qualified driver.

I could go on forever about this but I have a glass waiting to dispute sobrietary with me and time is gettin' on:D

No matter how good a driver you eventually become, you will always have to beware of other idiots.

    Look over you shoulder
    - before changing lanes
    - before pulling out into traffic
    - before turning left or right

    1. Observation
    2. Use your head - give 100% attention while driving - anything less and you're posing a danger to yourself, and more importantly, other drivers
