Just a quick question, why do irish broadband speeds have decent download e.g chorus offering 30mb dl, eircon, smart etc offering 24mb download, but all the upload packages are shíte.

there are loads of isp's in europe/usa that offer 25mb dl
    / 10-25mb up.

why has no irish company offered decent upload speeds?

Most residential broadband products are designed this way. The expectation is that a residential user will use downloads far more then uploads.

For instance on DSL, if you wanted an equal upload speed, then you would only get 12mb down / 12 mb up, rather then the normal 24mb / 1mb.

Similar with cable, you would need lower download speeds in order to offer higher upload speeds.

Only on fibre do you typically get symmetric speeds, due to the way it is designed.

thanks bk, but just wondering, isnt ntl fibre nowadays?

but they dont seem to offer symetric speeds.

30mb down 3mb up being their best upload speed package.

3Mb up is pretty decent - if you need any more than that you need dedicated bandwidth.

No, however their marketing is effective. :)

It's fibre backbone but still co-ax to houses. Shorter runs of co-ax than it used to be but "fibrepower" is total marketing speak.
