Hey I noticed from the vids in peoples logs that a few wear weightlifting shoes when Squatting and Power Cleaning. I do these lifts also but don't wear shoes cos all I have are Running shoes.

I am just wondering would it be worth buying weightlifting shoes if you're squatting heavy 3 times a week and cleaning also? Where is the best place to get them, online? Any sugestions for brands? Adidas seem most popular.

    Thanks.

I squat in weightlifting shoes and my observations would be:

    - As a beginner don't bother with the Adistars. 3 times the price for somethng that just needs to be hard, flat and have a small heel. I went for Do-Win's that were in a bargain basket sale on a website I can't remember the name of, they're perfect. Think about it you won't be walking in them or anything just taking two steps back, squatting and reracking. They don't need to be complicated.

    - At the start you'll probably lose kg's off your max with them as they change the mechanics of your squat. It's very easy to go WAY below parralel and get buried in them.

    - I don't complete my workout in them. They go on, I squat, they come off. I put runners back on for all the other stuff. They aren't designed to walk in, the sole is very rigid so I don't want to loosen it up by strutting about in them.

How much did you pay Kev? I wouldn't mind a small, solid heel in my shoes. They're currently completely hard and flat - €3 canvas shoes in Dunnes. Not lifting big numbers so wouldn't spend a lot of money on this.

I think the cheapest ones are from vsathletics.com. This would only be ok if do a group buy as shipping is fairly pricey from the states. We ordered two pairs, which, shipping included, came to about €77 per pair. The solid, wide sole makes them savage for squats but I have to relearn how to clean in them (raised heel changes things a little). I can still clean the same weight but they just feel odd (this might not make sense!).

You can get the do-wins from pullum sports for £65, I forget what the shipping costs were. Pullums also do the adidas ones and had ironwork II for a while but I think they might be sold out.

Also dynamic-eleiko.com has some closeout deals on the older adidas models but in fairly unconventional sizes.

    I got mine here

Expensive I guess from America but I really like them.

I'd echo this, not as someone who knows a huge deal about it or anything but I've seen countless videos of people putting up huge numbers wearing a pair of Ironworks and cheaper shoes. Plus I can't figure out why the Adistars would add a huge amount to anyones lifts that the ironworks wouldn't.

I got mine (Ironworks III) from Holdallsports.co.uk but I'd advise against dealing with them as they were a royal pain to deal with when there was a little mix up with email addresses, I ended up having to threaten them with going to PayPal before they sorted things out. Funnily enough they were in my hands two days after that

Did you get the ones with the 3/4" heel?

I've last years model but I think they are pretty much the same. Yep 3/4" heel.

Here's a question & answer I got from them before ordering.

Q: "What is the difference in height between the ball of the foot and the heel?"
A: "The difference in height is approximately 12-15 mm"

The Dowin heel is made of wood. It is not going to loosen off by just walking around the gym in them. They are designed to walk in. They're shoes.

It's the sole he's trying to take care of, not the heel.

Plus it's just more comfortable to walk around in a pair of runners.

I just think taking on and off the shoes twice as often would do as much damage as walking on them. The comfort aspect is fair enough. But even for exercises like lunging, pressing, curls - basically anything standing - there is some benefit to be gained from leaving the shoes on over a pair of trainers.

I find wearing the shoes for OH pressing screws my bar path on the press.

But it could just be my obesity.

Your obesity seems to effect just about every post you make, you should really look into loosing weight if its getting in your way that much.

Its not, it was a joke.

I got a pair of ironworks, very comfortable, stable and good looking shoe, have only used them a few times and havent lifted heavy in them yet, they take getting used to! i would advise you to make sure your form is perfect before buying a pair. Going from barefoot to a heel is very strange indeed.
