Tri Clothing

I'm taking up triathlon this year and I'm not sure which tri clothing to buy, so I've got a whole load of newbie questions...

I'm doing a pool based sprint tri first (maybe two), but it's mostly meant as prep for the London Triathlon which I'm planning on doing olympic distance at later in the year.

I'm debating tri suit vs. tri shorts. Tri suit has the advantage that you potentially don't have to put on a top in T1, but then, if it's cold, you might put a top on anyway. I could wear my HRM under it for the swim though, which would save a few seconds.

Surely with no wetsuit (for the pool based tri) a tri suit has more drag that tri shorts?

What is the point of a "tri top"? Are they meant to be worn while swimming? Otherwise why not just stick on a cycling / running top in T1?

    Any advice appreciated - thanks!

There are few things as frustrating as struggling with a top in transition. Try it at home after a shower- try pulling on a top before you dry off. Not too easy unless the top is loose, in which case you'll get the parachute effect on the bike.

If you're definitely going to be doing a few tris, go for the all-in-one trisuit I reckon. Not much to choose between the shorts/top combo and the trisuit, but I find I'm always pulling the top down to cover the ol' muffin roll with the combo. Not a good look...

(Just watch out for back pockets on the pool swim, they will slow you down a bit.)

Is this not reason enough to avoid wearing a tri top in the pool? Its a shame to put in lots of effort improving your swim technique only to be held back by your pockets! OP, I have the same dilemma but have decided to go with tri shorts only in the Joey Hannon and then glide elegantly (ahem...) in to the top afterwards.

I think you can get some shorts with pockets in them. I went to buy a pair of trishorts for the duathlon last Sun. €60 odd. They were selling 2XU tri suit for €99, so decided to get the suit as I will be able to use it in my first Tri which is in a pool in a few weeks time.

    Trisuit, trisuit, trisuit, trisuit, trisuit!!!!

In case you've mis-understood me, definitely get a trisuit!

The shorts/top combo just doesn't work on us amateurs - only some of the tall, lean elite machines can get away with the shorts/top. And even at that, some of them still have the midrift roll too!!

Trisuits are designed for the swim as well as the other legs of the race so bear in mind that it'll aid your flow through the water if you buy a decent one. 2XU are my favourite but the Orca ones are great too.
