Cheap i3 Laptops?

Just wondering how good a cheap i3-based lappie would be compared to a(n even cheaper) basic C2D-based Celeron/Pentium laptop given the decent performance of the new-and-improved HyperThreading implementation in their desktop counterparts. Also wondering how low the prices go - I've seen a basic Dell Inspiron i3 (in both 15" and 17" incarnations) for €499 + shipping but I was wondering if any of the other brands had released anything to rival it?

On paper (synthetic benchmarks etc), it will be be a fair bit faster than any of the low-end Pentium Dual Core's.

Mostly it will perform similar-ish to the mid-range Core2Duos (P8600 etc), and it'll pull ahead slightly in anything multi-threaded.

And you definitely wouldn't have gotten a P8600 laptop for €499 this time last year. So from that point of view, its great value, and a definite improvement.

How bad are shipping times at the moment? I notice that on their website Dell allege they have gone back to the dreaded "3+ weeks shipping" business again... :( But there don't seem to be any resellers of the Inspiron 15-i3 and I haven't seen any other cheap i3s on the market... :o

Ive seen a few i3-based laptops in the €500-600 range. There's a Toshiba L500-1XC on amazon for £434 at the moment, thats fairly cheap for an i3 laptop. There's also an Acer 5740 for £467, and a Sony EB10E for £495 (seems fairly popular).

Those amazon prices will get a few quid more expensive when you adjust for Irish vat, but shipping should be free on them all.
