Finland's Civil Aviation Administration (Finavia) said in a statement Thursday it would introduce incentives to carriers to raise passenger numbers.
Finavia added it would reimburse carriers three euros for each extra passenger this year and two euros next year.
"We want to be involved in supporting the aviation business together with the airlines," said in the statement Kimmo Ruotsalainen, Finavia's marketing director.
"Finavia aims to provide a cost-efficient business environment. Even before the discount, we were one of Europe's cheapest airports."
    Finavia runs 25 airports.

Well this is a reward to the Finnish carrier for doing their job well. I wonder what the benchmark is for "extra passengers". Is it MORE than this year or MORE than last year? Airlines which boost their numbers will be getting bums on seats AND a small bonus form the airport operator.

No doubt it is a positive measure by Finavia, can you see the DAA doing that? The DAA do offer incentives to carriers but they are in the form of discounted charges/fees for new routes.

Finavia run 25/27 civilian airports in Finland. Due to its topography and prevailing climate Finland has always been very proactive in terms of aviation.

On a pedantic point, the govt isn't charging people to enter Ireland, the EUR10 travel tax is a payment to leave the country! Its as if they are unhappy that people would have the audacity to leave our Emerald Isle! Sounds absurd when you say it out loud.

Sorry, of course, it's the leaving the country tax inspired by Mayor Quimby's leaving Springfield tax in the Radioactive Man episode of the Simpsons! :)

Are there not sliding scales of airport charges for new routes in Ireland? First year free, second year X% of charges, third year Y% etc?

Finland got their independence in 1917 and have similar population to Ireland. They are a far superior to this diabolical excuse we have for a country. This is another example of that...
