Leinster squad to face the Glasgow Warriors…

    FORWARDS:
John Fogarty, Trevor Hogan, Bernard Jackman, Stephen Keogh, Ronan McCormack, Kevin McLaughlin, Malcolm O'Kelly, Mike Ross, Paul Ryan, Eoin Sheriff, Richardt Strauss, Devin Toner, CJ van der Linde, Stan Wright

BACKS: Shaun Berne, Girvan Dempsey, Shane Horgan, Chris Keane, David Kearney, Simon Keogh, Ian Madigan, Fergus McFadden, Isa Nacewa, Paul O'Donohoe, Eoin O'Malley

REFEREE: Nigel Owens (WRU), ASSISTANT REFEREES: Michael Black (IRFU), Mark Hermin (IRFU), 4th OFFICIAL: Edward Kenny (ARLB), 5th OFFICIAL: Sean Gallagher (ARLB)

Pretty weak squad - anyone on the Ireland 22 not there - so no Reddan, Jennings, or Cullen along with all the first 15 players. Shaggy and Fogarty back though.

I reckon there's only 4 of the first team in that squad.

First XV you have CJ, Fogarty, McLaughlin, Nacewa, Horgan.

XXII then you'd have Wright, Jackman/Strauss, MOK, Berne.

Glasgow will be missing a lot of players who will be in the Scotland squad and some through injury.

BTW why is this game on Thursday? If it was on Friday some of the scots travelling over might have gone to it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,106 ✭✭✭andrewdcs

Thinking the same, though I know a bunch of scots fans who'll be over Wednesday thru Saturday (god bless their Livers).

Fixture congestion is getting critical due to snow / etc. earlier in year. HEC is back on very soon and we've 5 rounds of play left. Two games in hand at home need to be won, that will assure top 4 so zero risk is order of the day.

Glasgow don't have the resources to compete as they'd want either thankfully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭durkadurka

I reckon Glasgow will be even weaker though.

Weak squad! Ireland internationals along with U20s internationals has seriously weakened Leinster!

    Playing for the U20s probably.

It's possible Strauss may be used in the backrow, he has played there before. Leinster's options are awfully thin there at the moment.

Actually that would be interesting to see.
I've been hearing positive things about Paul Ryan though. Could be another McLaughlin coming out of nowhere.

There only seems to be three back row forwards named though. We'll see I guess. It's always good to start young, Irish forwards so hopefully Ryan gets some game time, but Strauss is our only real cover at 7 for a HEC match at this point so Cheika may want to see him there.

He sure has. Remember when he and Rocky came before last season in a blaze of glory? Elsom's still revered. CJ's plodding along filling someone else's space, that is when he's not injured.

It'd be best for all concerned I think if he tapped his feet together three times and went home.

Otherwise on that team - I know Paul Ryan's brother, so glad he's involved, but it's never a good sign when there's a player you've never heard of, in my case Eoin Sheriff.

Also, I know there's epic fixture congestion, but still, Thursday? Who thought of that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭durkadurka

Glasgow had 8 players in the team for the england game , add in thom evans and we can assume they will only have about 6 first teamers against leinster. Leinster's b team must be better than glasgow's b team.

Is this game not on TV? It's not mentioned on the Broadcast Schedule on the ML site...

    http://www.magnersleague.com/matchcentre/table.php

    Leinster's Run-in (in order):

    Warriors (h)
    Connacht (h)
    Munster (a)
    Ospreys (h)
    Warriors (a)
    Edinburgh (h)

    Connacht (a) - Date TBC

IMO Leinster have a nice run-in to the playoffs, you'd have to fancy them to get at least 5 wins from 7. That should give them a home semi-final.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,193 ✭✭✭[Jackass]

Looking forward to seeing Ryan at 7. It's a decent team, and looking forward to seeing the McFadden / O'Malley combo again. I think McFadden will end up a 12 replacing D'Arcy when the time comes...fantastic player though.

CJ's contract runs until the end of next season, but the first half of his stay at Leinster has been extremely disapointing, not only for injury, which can't be helped, but we've only got rare glances of his scrummaging power, and he seem lazy and / or unfit around the park. Believe it or not, I was more excited about CJ's arrival than I was about Rocky's when they were announced....how wrong I was!!

Ross deserves to start..he was in the GP team of the season when he signed for us, but we've been very unfair on him with oppertunities...I think he's earned a start and being dropped might be the kick up the arse CJ needs...

I think the Magners League final will be played in the RDS against Munster...hopefully a replay of the Heineken Cup final the week before....should be epic!!

Also, should senior Leinster team take precident over u-20's national team?

4 home games and away to connacht. All depends on heineken qf i think. If they win the qf they might take their eyes off the ball.

Rightly so tbf. I expect 4 home wins regardless but if a HEC SF comes around the league run will suffer. If we don't make the SF we have no excuse for not topping the league.

Anyway Leinster are all but into the playoffs already.

I've never been more excited about the ML run-in, no more dead rubbers.

The Welsh race for the HEC adds to the interest too.

Granted most of these are home fixtures but i reckon that's pretty much the strongest run-in a team could have in the league atm IMO. Bare Connacht at home :o 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th in the league just behind them.

That's like Man U having Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and erm, Burnley(/Connacht). (In a certain light) :p .

I've never seen the Welsh so disinterested in the ML to be honest. Scarlets and Cardiff dont give seem to give a rats. Ospreys should hang in for a playoff spot but I wouldn't be surprised if they fell away. The Dragons in fairness to them are giving it a real go in every game, great attitude at that club.

Ah here, did you see Scarlets performances against Leinster in the HEC? They were bloody shocking. The Blues managed to lose to Sale, who are awful this year. They won a game at home against Toulouse, but sure Glasgow beat Toulouse away last year. Like Glasgow they couldn't keep that kind of performance up. Ultimately only the Ospreys qualified and that was as runner-up - and they're doing fine in the ML.

I simply don't buy this "they don't care" line. I just think they lack the squads to compete in the ML - i.e., I don't think they're good enough. One of the Blues, Scarlets or the Dragons will miss out on HEC rugby next year due to their place in the ML. That will have a massive impact financially for the club and personally for the players who will be missing out on the top level of European rugby and it could hamper their chances of gaining international honours. They have every reason in the world to take the ML seriously, they're just incapable of performing better.

Also, nearly all the sides in the ML at the moment are bloody good sides. It's not like it's easy to go to Edinburgh or Glasgow and win, and I certainly think Munster and Leinster are better than the Welsh sides no matter how seriously they take it.

Who cares! Ross gets a well deserved start - hope he makes the most of it.

Leinster have no backrow cover on the bench...but I don't think they actually have any other backrowers left between injuries, internationals and the U20s.

You don't pick a captain as a reward for performances, you pick a captain for his leadership and for his ability to make decisions during the game.

Perhaps 'reward' was the wrong word. I can't say I've ever noticed Birch's 'leadership' or 'ability to make decisions during the game', other than recently to give away brainless penalties, while at the same time looking miles behind the pace of play. And yes, I know, he managed a try in the last match.

I agree with you that he gives away too many penalties and is past the pace of top standard HEC games, and you didn't even have to mention that he has forgotten the art of throwing straight balls from out of touch ... But he is more than up to Glasgow A's at home I reckon.

It would be hard to pick a captain from the 15 being played other than Jackman. Who has leadership qualities from that 15? Jackman is massively respected in the squad. He is a coach for Clontarf even, so you can be sure he can motivate the players. I would suggest Leo, Jennings, BOD, Heaslip, Horgan in that order (for Leinster).

(For some reason, I've never been keen on the idea of Mal as a captain)
