Where to find a great UI/UE / graphics design person?

I'm trying to help the software company I work for find an amazing UI/UE / graphics design person who can help improve the design of our innovative iPhone and web applications, and contribute to some other graphics design projects.

I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to find a top-of-the-class student / graduate from one of the best courses in the country and ask them to work for us for a few months with a view to a longer-term position... but I'm not sure which are the very best courses.

What courses / colleges do you think I should contact? NCAD? Ballyfermot College of Further Education? Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology? DIT? CIT?

We're based near Cork, by the sea... really cool location and it's a great place to work... so if anyone knows someone who might be interested, or can recommend a course I should contact, maybe they can send me a PM?

I'd be grateful for any advice.

    Thanks!!

I wouldn't be looking for anyone from a particular course or college, I'd be taking applicants from anywhere and give them an interview if they look good, look at there projects and see if you want to bring them in.

You'll only know at an interview if there what your looking for.

All colleges and courses will provide different caliber graduates no matter what someones opinion is on how good a particular college or course is

You should place an ad on Creativeireland.com.

You should write a good job spec with a list of skill required, duration of the project, etc.

You will get plenty of talented persons applying I'm sure.

To be honest I don't understand why you want a recent graduate! Why not someone who has experience?

Thanks! We'd prefer to find someone with 5+ years experience, but we're finding it hard to find someone like that, which is why I thought it might be a good idea to contact some of the main related courses.

Thanks for the tip about CreativeIreland!

Where have you advertised the job already? In the current climate it shouldn't be difficult to find someone, in fact you should be spoilt for choice. Are you sure your job spec is realistic? I often see jobs where candidates are expected more or less have two degrees (i.e. skills that are thought to different disciplines). If this is the case why not hire two different people with different skill sets to work part time?

I think its hard to find someone thats a coder and a designer and also expert in UI. Not that I think it has to be 3 people either. Just that there aren't too many people who are interested and good at doing all 3 things. Its actually hard to switch between coding and design. Most want to concentrate on one or the other. Also UI design is very different to graphic design, so you can't just shoehorn a person from one discipline into the other. So I would doubt theres loads of suitable people to pick from.

Perhaps you could sponsor a project in some of the colleges, or take on some people for work experience, and thus train them up, rather than hoping to get someone off the shelf.
