Beginners guide to setting up TV

    Hi
Am a complete novice and would really appreciate some advice on getting TV set up - I have searched through the forums and cant seem to find basic advice on what the options are for getting the basic channels. (Sorry if this has been covered before).

    So here is the deal:

I am renting an apartment and would prefer not to commit to a years contract with Sky / Chorus etc as I do not know how long I will be here.

I want to be able to watch the Irish channels RTE 1&2, TV3, TG4. I would also like to view BBC1 and 2, ITV and channel 4. Beyond that anything else would be fine, but not necessary.

I checked uchoose.ie and I can see that I could choose a package from either Chorus or Sky..however both entail 12 month contracts and I think I would need a dish for Sky (is that right?) - and living in an apartment block I am not sure if I would need permission for this from the management company / landlord etc?

I have tried to 'tune in' the TV but cannot seem to get anything on it at the mo (I am in ground floor so maybe this has something to do with it).

So - my question in a nutshell: is there any way I can get access to the normal channels without committing to a contract with sky / chorus, without having to install a dish, and not having to pay for something I dont necessarily want (i.e. all the extra channels these companies offer but I am not really into).

    Any advice gratefully received!

First you'll need to ask you neighbours or landlord what TV service is available in your block. Your apartment block may have a shared satellite dish.

To be able to watch RTE 1&2, TV3, TG4 BBC1 & 2, ITV and channel 4 from one source you'll need to subscribe to a pay TV provider. You can get these channels for "free" but will need an aerial (rabbits ears may work) and have good reception for RTE 1&2, TV3 , TG4 :- for BBC1 & 2, ITV and channel 4 you'll need a satellite dish this and free-sat receiver.

The "Free" route may initially sound attractive but the cost mount up. You'll need two signal sources , an aerial and a Sat dish. You'll also need 2 receivers one for DTT (assuming it's RTE digital you want) and a second for free-sat content. You can get a dual receiver for DTT and free-sat but they are expensive. The installation cost of these systems can also be expensive.

The best and cheapest option may be to ring the apartment blocks TV provider and explain your a short term tenant and can't sign up to a years contract at that address and see if they'll do a shorter term or will allow you to carry the contract to a new address when ever you move .
