Spring Cutting

Has anyone encountered and problems with cutting down a spring for an Aeg, I'm looking at this as a cheaper option than buying an m100 for an Aeg I bought abroad which is too hot. Also does putting a downgraded spring in an Aeg which is made for a higher power spring have any effects on the gearbox etc ? as I've heard using .12 bb's in Aeg's made for .20bb's and upwards is bad for the Aeg.

Never ever ever ever use .12's in an AEG, ever!
Honestly a new spring is what €15 and will save you any hassle in the long run, less pressure on the gearbox and better reliability.

If you don't have a chrono get a shop to do it for you, you have an illegal firearm under Irish law, don't mess about here.

I have a chrono, I have several firearms licences, and I also have a disassembled Aeg, that does not constitute as a firearm, you're slightly overreacting.

Cool, thank you.

What kinda gun is it and how powerful is it at the moment? some come with springs that you can cut down but a lot of the chinese ones come with a spring thats just about long enough for the stroke of the gearbox meaning theres no room to cut any off.

If you do go for a new spring though, dont get an M100 as its likely you'll be in the same boat. get hold of a promethius MS90.,:)

I'm open to correction on this, but if you have used the 'orrible little yellow .12's to chrono your AEG you'd get a reading over the legal limit.

Try chronoing it with .20's before you chop or change the spring.

It wouldnt be over the limit, its still 1 joule of energy, they just travel faster due to being lighter.

Yes, but a chronograph doesn't weigh them. If it was set to think they're .2s and they're lighter, then it'd calculate the energy as being higher than it is because it's all like "holy crap, that's one fast-moving .2g BB".

He didnt chrono with .12g though - he just said he'd heard they can damage the gun, and my reading is that he was then prompted to wonder if there were other things that could cause mechbox problems, in this case, a shorter spring.

Not in the slightest, I am telling you the truth, as a licence holder you are aware they don't cover anything but the weapon with the matching serial to the licence, that is totally irrelevant.

What is relevant is that you have a chrono and have disassembled the aeg.

If the spring is long enough to be still compressed after cutting you can cut it, I use a file and pliers, cut then smooth it off.

Alternately you can get an ms90 and fit it, what make and model is the aeg?

1 joule is 328 fps with a .2g bb FYI, the fps limit goes up or down with weight, here is a calculator http://www.arniesairsoft.co.uk/?filnavn=/articles/fps_limits/fps_calc.htm

The Aeg is a JG g36, I bought it from Gunner Airsoft, who are supposed to downgrade to 1 joule for Irish Law, but they downgraded it to 240 fps by cutting up the hop up bucking, also affecting the accuracy, so I decided to change the hop up bucking ( bought a systema Y600 ) but it now chrono's between 390-400 fps. I've also been advised since that a cut spring gives inconsistent readings so I guess getting the correct spring is better option. Also it was chrono'd with .20's.
Thanks to all for your help :)

ah right.,

you wont have enough in the length of the spring in that gun to cut the spring, you'll have to pick up a replacement.
Get hold of a promethius MS90 and it'll put you at around 315-320., you can get them from ehobby.,
