Do I need a new MAF?

    Hi all,

    I have a 320Cd - 2005.

The engine light comes on in the dash every so often. It might stay on for a few hours and then re appear after a few hours.

A mechanic told me that the MAF needs to be replaced. I brought it to an auto-electrician who ran a diagnostic on it but there were no faults relating to the MAF.

I don't want to spend the money on replacing the MAF until I'm sure that it needs to be replaced.

How do I know for sure?

Unplug it and see if you notice an improvement.

Methinks the poor old MAF is instantly binned far too easily these days...

    Hey,

What kind of improvement should I notice? MPG, torque?

Will I do any damage by unplugging it?

Most of the time a failing Maf won't produce dtc's (fault codes). It can take a long time for a maf to completely fail usually added by slowly reduced power over time. A maf test is easy if you know how to use your diagnostics properly most don't. If a maf has completely failed its easy to test manually simply by un-plugging it. If the car seems more powerful with it plugged out then its toast. Sounds like you need a proper diagnostic technician to check it over. Although this test only works if completely failed. A diagnostic test showing below 80% in g/s per bhp of the car will tell if its on the way out.
