    Hi All,

I'm thinking of having a steel frame repainted. Has anyone ever gotten this done professionally, either by a company or by an individual?

Looking for some guide prices and recommendations on who to go to..

I was thinking of doing it myself but I don't really have time to do it twice after I screw it up the first time :D

    Cheers!

After doing it myself i can tell you it does take quite a while, if you were getting it professionally you might think about powdercoating a couple lads here have it done. Costs about 100 from what i remember, from what i know it's heavier, but will last better than paint. On the professional painting front i have no advice i'm afraid

Depending on the frame, if it is sentimental or Reynolds 531DB it may be worth getting done by an outsider. you might be lucky to pick up the origional decals from the manufacturer.

Its quite a nice frame - columbus sl tubing so I want to do a good job with it. I'd get it painted rather than powdercoated as I think an older frame with lugs might look a bit odd with powdercoat.

I'll ring up a few auto painters but still hoping for a recommendation...

    Columbus Sl :)

Powder coating will tend to chip more than a conventional spray job.

My Peugeot 501 frame is with an car sprayer at the mo, did the stripping and priming myself.

Let me know how you get on..

I've stripped most of the frame myself. But there is still a layer of what looks to be anti rust paint that refuses to come up no matter what I use on it. I'm going to send it to a sandblaster this week but still on the hunt for a painter and a reasonable price.

If you're in the Dublin area, you could try contacting Andy Murphy in Stagg Cycles (01 628 3022). His dad did a lovely paint job on a Reynolds 531C frame for me a few years ago. Not sure if he's still at it, but no harm contacting him i'd say.

I was looking into getting a car sprayer in my area to do the work, wasn't sure though. Did it work out any cheaper then powder coating?

    I presume you've used Strypit?
Evil stuff, anything remaining after that will need to be mechanically removed.

Yea I used Nitromors which I think is the same thing. It wasn't as bad as I thought to do - a well ventilated area and gloves and goggles are a must... I've gotten to the point where chemicals won't do any more so hopefully the sandblasting will do the rest.

Strypit is much stronger than the Nitromors IMO

i used both on the frame i stripped, have to say the difference is astounding. after getting the nitromors on my hands and not finding it bad i tried using strypit in short sleeves. ended up getting 2 tiny drops of strypit on my arm that left a pretty impressive burn.

I'm just back from the spray booth, watched me old Peugeot 501 get transformed into something beautiful - 80's Carrera colour scheme.
It's getting a second coat of lacquer, and will be picked up tomorrow.
I had to put the decals on myself before the lacquer, as the sprayer guy didn't want the blame if it went Fubar!
    Pix up tomorrow hopefully:D

Who did the painting? PM me if you wouldn't mind!!

Ahhhh, my painter was doing this for the first time, and as he knows the father-in-law well he done me a favour.
He didn't realise that it would take so much time, and I think he was a little pissed off with me by the end, cos there was 3 different paints, lacquer, blowing in etc etc.
Whilst he is looking forward to seeing the finished article on the road, he has no interest in doing another!
