    Hi guys,

I've started tkd about a year ago and have had this niggeling pain in my left hip joint since pretty much day 1, it's really bothersome when performing a side or turning kick from the left leg. It seems to be getting worse lately, I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with such a problem and if there's anything I can do about it?

    Thanks.

my right hip is in a bad way but i've been doing TKD for a long time :D

i can only tell you to try different stretches.

concentrate on ones that work your hip out and your hamstrings.

BTW, do you get back pain also??

    and what age are you??

No my back is fine, its the turning/side kick motion is definitely agrivating something in my hip joint. I'm 25 btw.

Hi there, you need to be careful there, is the pain in the joint? Are you feeling pain from within the joint as if the cartilidge was wearing down?

You should seek some professional advice from a recognised physio first of all and DO NOT rely on information from the forum here, not from me or anyone else, what we can do is give some tips, my tip is see a physio.

But from my experience, it could be that you are not stretching your hip flexors or you ITB. This is common with some old fashioned TKD training where emphasis is put on the stretching of the aductors on the inside of the legs (side splits for example) but the outer muscles surrounding the hips are ignored thus creating an imbalance between muscles and tightness results in pain when you use your legs.

First things first though, seek a physio and they will know straight away as they will be able to see it in front of them.

I second the opinion that you'd be best off getting seen by a professional.

I had problems with my hips/outer-thigh when I did TKD; it was one of those things where it was slightly annoying at first, then very gradually got worse until I could no longer lift my leg at all. It still hasn't healed fully to this day - even though it doesn't give me any trouble in training or day to day, I have to be careful to warm up/down properly or things can get nasty. Get it checked out.

There's all sorts of different things you might have to do to fix it: you may have to do stretches, you might have to do exercises to address some strength imbalance, or you may even have to just take a break from TKD for a while. You'll have to get examined by somebody who knows their stuff to find out what the best course of action is.

Ok cool seems like sound advice. The pain is definitely in the joint rather than muscular, hopefully the damage isn't too bad.

Could be something simple so don't worry too much.
