So I recently went from windows xp to windows 7. its all well and good apart from 2 glaring problems. my microphones will not work (i have 2, an old creative one and one on my headset). one is plugged into the soundcard at the back of the computer (creative one) and i dont have the other plugged in. this is down to having a front box below my dvd drive for my soundcard (creative x-fi fatal1ty) and it seems a bit finicky about that sorta thing.

on xp i would have the mic plugged into the back and the headset in the front and it worked fine. with the same setup on windows 7 the microphone works fine in so far as i can talk into it and the sound comes out the speakers, but it doesnt work with programs that use a mic - namely skype and ventrillo. ive been through all the settings and it all appears to be rosey so I cant for the life of me figure out what the hell is wrong. very frustrating.

    now problem #2
msn messenger just plain isnt working. its installed, i try to sign in and it just stalls then comes up with an error - Error code: 81000306 to be exact. says there might be a problem with my net connection, which there clearly isnt. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling 3 times now but each to no avail and the same problem. again, this is really frustrating as there is no logical reason as to why it isnt working.

any help would be absolutely fabulous and i will give my own personal thumbs up to anyone that can solve these problems :)

You're sure the MSN version you're getting is compatible for Windows 7? Whatever the case, search for the error code using Google or on the Microsoft website and see what you find.

Regarding the mic, if you go to Device Manager in Control Panel, does it indicate that the mic is working properly? (or is there a yellow flag over it?)

I ve had similiar trouble with Win 7 and microphones.....but first!
Download and install the latest version of msn before trying to connect. Then try logging in.
As regards the mic....we have had the same trouble here(in a repair shop) and despite jumping through hoops, the simplest solution was to buy a cheap newer microphone headset from tesco's and running it that way.
