We've done this one before in previous years. Time to do it again. The club I've been a member of want, wait for it, ... €285 for adult membership! I kid you not. It is €135 for the membership, plus a €150 levy to help the clubs finances. So, can anyone top that and what are the more reasonable rates that clubs are charging?

    crazy money, shocking in fact.

i transferred up here to dublin last year and the membership is 100 quid. my membership at home was 20euro and 10er for non players. that covered insurance. anything more than 20quid is robbery.

€20 wouldn't cover insurance now. It is €1000 per adult team for insurance. So if you're looking at a panel of 25 players it works out at €40 per player. Then you have affiliation entry fees etc. on top of that.

While some of the memberships charged are over the top I don't think around €100 is too much to be asking of players. Over the course of the year it is an insignificant sum.

That's the club I am talking about Frank. They want that €150 for each of 5 years too. This for adult non-playing GAA members. It is scandalous. As we can see, I could get 5 years membership for just the levy in some of the clubs that people are members of here.

€50 for adult members, playing or non playing.

    €30 for students/OAP

    Playing €50
    Non-Playing/OAP/Student €30

Flukely - have they made any sort of case for this €150 levy?
Do they realise there is a recession on? Or are they actually trying to get rid of non-playing members?

Could possibly be understandable if it was a one-off but for five years it's a bit rich (pardon the pun) especially for non-playing members.

It is a development levy: "to facilitate the development of playing/training pitches." It is a big club and it does need better playing facilities and their bar takings are down, but it is way over the top. Without the levy membership is expensive. They have different categories of membership. The €135 is just for GAA membership, and is the lowest category. The highest fee is €505 for an adult member, giving access to the swimming pool, tennis, gym, snooker and the bar. The €135 is for GAA membership and also includes gym and bar membership.

What's the general feeling in the club regarding this?

A lot of clubs are putting developments on hold given the economic circumstances

Also €750 over five years is a fair wad of cash for something that non-playing members are only going to get minimal benefit from.

I know people like to support their club but I would agree this sounds massively excessive.

Given the price, I have not renewed. I am sure I am not the only one. I am very rarely in the clubhouse. I would do most of my socialising elsewhere, so I don't know what the general reaction has been.

    That's bonkers!

They know they have lads by the short and curlies. If they want to play they have to pay and as we all know a transfer isn't easily achieved (and rightly so) in the GAA. It could be argued that they are exploiting this hold they have over players to increase the coffers.

What is the general feeling of the players about this Flukey?

Is the membership being paid or is it slow coming in?

What is the club policy on non-paying players? Is it no pay no play?

Adult Playing is 180 euro, non playing is 100 euro

    Student is also 100 euro.

Same in my club I think. Think they do a special rate for unemployed players too. Juveniles are 80 quid and I think there's a discount for each subsequent child.

we buy a ticket for the all county draw at 130euros that covers your membership and insurance plus the draw

    €100 for employed players
    €50 for unemployed players
    €40 for non-playing adults
not sure of juvenile around €30 I think

    20 for adults
    5 for youth
maximum 50 quid for a family

Adult fee also includes social club membership.

    Adult - €65
    Student - €35
    OAP/Unemployed - €25

Some of the rates mentioned here seem absolutely crazy!

I wonder are some clubs using this money to pay for managers from other clubs etc., I wouldn't be too happy having to pay the fees I've seen on this thread.

The levy has been a part of the club fees for the past 5 years because of the clubs financial situation. There's massive redevelopment to be done (adult training in different parts of Dublin (Coolock for one example) because of the pressure on facilities in the club with teams only being allowed train for 45mins max during the week). I think if you've contributed to the development scheme one gets a reduction though open to correction on that.

In fairness the €505 gives access to a swimming pool which has nothing to do with the club other than it shares facilities with. Same goes for the tennis and the snooker. That's part of a Glenalbyn House membership which basically houses all of the different organisations, the GAA being the largest.

I think the reason the fee is so high is the fact that its among one of the biggest 5 clubs in Ireland and the amount of wear and tear on the (inadequate) home pitch and on the amount of equipment needed is massive not to mention the insurance. There are 8/9 adult football teams alone! not to mention literally hundreds of kids joining every year. However with the recession it would be appropriate if there was some sort of reduction shown.

    North Dublin
Adult playing or non playing €50.
Adult players must take out insurance €100
    Family membership €100
    Juvenile €10
    Associate €40

Fluckey thats serious money. We are looking at ways of reducing the burden on people when they join.

For families (Mother & Father) of a new juvenile member who has just moved to the area we are giving 2 years complimentary Associate membership. Just as a thank you for joining and welcome.

Membership was discussed at a meeting a few weeks ago and one of the young lads said its nothing for a lad to go out and spend €100 - 150 in a night so dont worry about increacing it to to €60/€70. We played safe and left it as it was.

For Juveniles they have training fees of €20 per quarter. Every team now expected to use our club facilities to become self sufficant 2 functions a year. All funds raised go to club who pay for everything

    100 for a playing adult
75 for a non playing adult.

Our players membership went up by 50 a year or two ago when the club implemented a much more comprehensive insurance for players. If you're out of work due to injury, you won't be out of pocket too much.
