My setup is as follows, I have 2 Sky+ boxes in my house one upstairs and one downstairs my subscription is €88 a month. As my wife and I watch completely different I decided to go multiroom and get another box downstairs. A local installer gave a price all in of €298 which included new box + replacing LNB FROM 4 TO 8 + €15 EXTRA A Month. I was'nt in the house at the time they carried this work out so when I got home I was gutted to see the new box was just a standard one with no facility to record have I been duped or is this the norm. When I inquired about a + box so that I could record they said that they have been discontinued. I thought Standard boxes were a thing of the past, If I applied for a HD Box to replace the Standard one would it cost me more money on top of the €15 extra a month I already pay Without the HD Subs.

at the very least its a breakdown in communication

if you ordered a sky+ as your second box then thats what you should have got...Sky are now only sending out HD boxes but these operate like a sky+ box

if you actually ordered a regular box then thats what you got and I dont know your options here, would be legal I guess.

also €300 seems an awful lot..why did you need an 8 LNB?

the current deal on HD boxes direct from sky is a lot less than that

if you dont seek to rectify what happened and just get a HD from Sky it will cost you more money and a further installation fee..but no more subscription fees per month

The Op has 2 sky + boxes = 4 independent feeds = quad LNB

To add anything else the LNB would have to be upgraded to an Octo (8 LNB)

Op, as its a local installer you should be able to contact him/her and try to rectify the situation.

If I ordered the HD Box (No Subs) to replace the ordinary box approx what kind of cost am I looking at and would the new card that came with the ordinary box be obsolete, the cables are already there for sky+.

I got no where with the installer so I wont be going to him again. I live in the Artane area can anyone recommend an installer or should I go to the Kiosk in Santry Shopping Centre.

I dont mind paying more money and the installation fee once I dont have to pay any more subscription fees per month.

If that installer was an official sky one, you should report him. That behaviour is nothing short of rip-off.

With the senario above, a standard upgrade costs the engineer €169 ( if he has processed it through an Sky retailer number ie. a brand new box and ordered you a new card ) An octo could cost anything, depends on where he bought it and his typical charge. They're on here for €34.85 - http://www.satellite.ie/acatalog/Octo__Eight_output_LNB_for_sky_mini_dish.html
but on average to trade we'll say €40
That's €209 cost to the engineer.
He charged you €298 so that €89 in his own pocket ( give or take )
His comission for a standard upgrade to multiroom, including sale and install, is in the region of €26.88 ( I kid you not )
    So that's €115.88

If he installed the HD without the sub his commissions would have been nearer €70 and HD Upgrade to multiroom €79 so he would have been €134 odd better off.

So with the above senario, if he had a bit of cop on he would have done better and you'd be a happy customer.

Did he order you a new card and supply a brand new box?

He did get a new card and a new box but the box was a standard one but I wanted one with a recording facility, he maintains it was a standard box I ordered. If I wanted to change the box to a HD box without the subs how much is it going to cost me bear in mind I am already paying €15 extra for the multiroom.

To swap the standard to HD without a sub would cost you €159. It's a costly experience for you.

Thank you Wizard Is that a one of payment with no extra monthly charge.

Yes, it is. You're swapping out to a HD with no sub, so no extra monthly fee.
