Check if the oil is black or if there is any 'gunge' like substance under the oil cap. It's also important to keep the oil level between the min and max on the dip stick. Will you be changing the oil or getting someone to do it?

Modern cars tend to have long service intervals, mainly for making them attractive to fleet buyers, but that doesn't mean it's ideal to leave it that long between changes. Oil and a filter is relatively cheap and engine rebuilds are really expensive. You will get different answers to this, but personally I would not let any car go more than about 6000 miles without an oil change.

It's good to check the level weekly between changes, do this when the engine is cold for most cars and on level ground. Top it up if neccesary, only takes a few minutes but and can save you big bills later.

Do the change with the correct SAE grade oil for your car (this will be in the cars handbook), using the wrong grade is a waste of time.

    1 year / 10 000 miles for petrol cars,

that is quite ok average for my opinion,

for turbocharged cars oil should be changed more often.
