...you don't talk about the hen-house.
Revenge of the Chinese chickens: Farmers throw trussed-up eagles into poultry pens to put them off hunting
Chinese farmers are trapping eagles and other birds of prey and throwing them into poultry pens so that the chickens can wreak their revenge on them.

The farmers say the trussed-up eagle is so frightened of poultry after the experience that they never return to hunt them.

Farmers have complained for years about eagles stealing their chickens but face fines or even jail if they kill the birds.
So instead they have come up with the idea of catching but not killing them to avoid incurring any penalties.

They say after the trussed-up birds is freed it never returns - while the chickens also learn self defence against the birds of prey.

Farmer Xiao Wu of Huaxi Village at Lin’an said: 'Those eagles have eaten nearly 300 chickens over the past three months, and now I catch them with a trap and let the chickens get revenge.

'Free range chickens get the best price, but the chickens are always the target of the eagles. I tried every other means to drive the eagles away, including scarecrows, bamboo sticks, even firecrackers.

'But they would always return. Now when they see their colleagues on the ground being mobbed by chickens they stay away. And the chickens are learning to be brave enough to drive away their attackers.'

The farmers bind the eagle’s claws and wings and leave them on the ground as the chickens exact revenge.

Mr Wu said: 'We all know the eagle is a nationally protected species and we will not harm the captured bird other than teaching it to fear chickens. I can’t release it any sooner, otherwise my chickens will all disappear.'

Check the picture - it's like seeing some hardman knacker on his first day in the Joy, rigt when he meets his new roommate.:D

That's clever and a good example of thinking sideways. The farmers are sorted and the eagles stay alive. Canny feckers the Chinese.

And Cookie_Monster how in gods name is that the same as if they killed the eagles? Jeez.

Yea and it made no sense. You admit its not the same, yet should be treated the same? Yep. Defo makes no sense. Lots of dead eagles versus a few eagles mobbed and then released and all their mates striking chicken from the menu at the Raptor Grill. Seems like a good solution to the situation.

Agreed, its an excellent way of handling the problem. There's no poison or killing, they only target the birds that are causing the problem, and the eagles are allowed fly away relatively unharmed but free to hunt whatever they want, even the chickens again if they're dumb enough. Where's the problem?

Or are they simply building a massive hatred of chickens in the eagle population which will eventually backfire on the farmer when the eagles wipe out his entire chicken stock in an act of revenge?

Eagle wants one chicken for dinner = loss of one chicken

Eagle bullied by chickens, harbours resentment = chicken massacre.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,265 ✭✭✭SugarHigh

This benifits the eagles because it stops them becoming reliant on the chickens as an easy food source, which may have led to the eagels hunting skills getting rusty the same way it happens to eagles in captivity.

Well it at least makes for some fun photographs.

Seriously though, the eagle isn't the innocent victim it's killing the chickens and in return it gets taught that you can't eat someone elses chickens. We're higher on the food chain, and no smarmy eagle is gonna steal our food!

innocent of what? It's great idea as already said, the eagle lives to fight another day but stays away from human food in the future. It's bad for these animals to start relying on human food sources it will get them killed as kick as trying to take food out of a lions mouth.

    REALLY! FACT!!!

Seriously we're talking about chickens, not even fighting chickens, just...chickens. They aren't going to cause any serious harm and the eagle isn't being poisoned or seriously hurt. You need to turn down your angry dial.

    What's your alternative?

That poverty-stricken farmers go bankrupt because their livestock are easy targets for an endangered species?

They aren't allowed trap and kill the eagles? You mean there is actually a law in China against that? In the same country that has tiger penis and bear bile on sale as aphrodisiacs?

And that in the same country that has a penchant for the same tiger penis and milked bear bile and feeding live cattle and chickens to tigers in Zoo's, and beating the crap out of live dogs to tenderise the meat and infuse it with the tasty fear hormone... that there is actually a market for humanely reared free range chicken???
Hey, kids, finish your humanely reared Chicken dinner or we'll be late for the bus to the zoo to watch Tiger feeding time!!

China. A nation of contradictions. :D

Having said that if eagles were nicking irish farmers chickens, they'd have AA guns mounted on the back of their tractors.

There must be enough chickens for everyone surely? The Eagle kills to survive, the farmer kills to profit.

I reckon if you just show the Irish eagles the pic in that report, that'll be enough to put the wind up them.
    'No trouble here, boss'.

Seems a good solution. The eagle escapes fairly unharmed (apart from it's pride) and will most likely not attack the livestock again. It is free to pursue it's natural prey afterwards.
    No harm no fowl*.
