Can I delay my claim for JSB?

I'm going to be made redundant in a few weeks (end of April) and I would like to take some time off to enjoy some of my redundancy money. I plan to wait a few weeks before signing on for JSB so that I can go on holidays and relax before having to rejoin the real world and sign on.

Can anyone tell me if I will get grief from the SW office for not signing on as soon as I'm out of work?

And before anyone jumps down my neck... I do NOT intend to make a backdated claim and yes, I will be looking for work during that time but realistically speaking I'm going not to get a job anytime soon (if I'm lucky maybe I'll get some work before signing on although my current run of luck didn't help me dodge the redundancy bullet :( ).

You can sign on whenever you want, lots of people don't bother thinking they will it another job.
If it was me i would sign on straight away, depending on what part of the country you are in it can take months to have your claim processed.took me 9-10 weeks.
But no one is going to say anything if you don't sign on straight away.

Dont forget though that if you do not sign on straight away you will not get any social insurance credits which are necessary to protect your old age pension.

It's not possible to backdate a claim anyway.

Your redundancy payment, if high enough, may disqualify you for a period.

    Redundancy

If you are under 55 and get a redundancy payment of more than €50,000 you will be disqualified from claiming Jobseeker's Benefit for the following lenght of time:
Amount of Redundancy Payment Period of Disqualification
    €50,000.00 - €55,000 1 Week
    €55,000.01 - €60,000 2 Weeks
    €60,000.01 - €65,000 3 Weeks
    €65,000.01 - €70,000 4 Weeks
    €70,000.01 - €75,000 5 Weeks
    €75,000.01 - €80,000 6 Weeks
    €80,000.01 - €85,000 7 Weeks
    €85,000.01 - €90,000 8 Weeks
    €90,000.01 and over 9 Weeks

Thanks for the replies everyone, it's much appreciated.

Trish2007... I only plan to take 4 or 8 weeks out, depending on whether or not I get a job that is, so i don't think my pension contributions will take too big a hit, especially if they now expect me to work until I'm 68!

Balagan... I'm not getting that much money anyway so disqualification is not an issue but thanks for the info.

I had a similar situation but decided to sign on immediately. Not signing on immediately leads to difficult questions later and you will loose credits. Based on your wish to enjoy some free time and you will have some financial security, signing on will not affect you having to wait around as it will take up to eight weeks for your claim to be processed. If you feel you will get JSB (basically two years full employment prior to redundancy) you will just get notification in a few weeks time and arrears for the period you have been waiting. You will not be required to sign on during the waiting period. Just make sure, if your going away you have someone who can look out for post etc.

If you will only get JSA (Unlikely based on your receiving redundancy) you would have to stick around for means test etc!

    Thanks for the reply Dempo1,

I've 12 or 13 years full employment behind me so I should be getting JSB. I thought I'd still have to sign on while waiting for my claim to be processed, not having to sign on while waiting changes things a bit.

the only thing you might want to consider is, that if you need to sign on in two years time they will be looking at your stamps for this year,if you are missing too many, you may not get a full payment.

Yes indeed, i had 20 years until the country went to ****e!

When i signed on (Immediately) i heard nothing for about 8 weeks, then i got notification of approval, length of time i would get it (1 year)and was advised when to sign on. Basically you go to your local post office after this notification and you will get your arrears and then collect weekly. You will need your full P.45, any details re your redundancy, ID to include Birth cert and proof of address (Utility) bill etc on signing on.

For those with no savings or resources, they can visit their CWO and request payments until JSB is approved. 13 years and being made redundant? what line of work were you in? I was hospitality.
