Pope's exorcist blames the Devil for abuse.

Apparently the Pope's top exorcist is blamming Satan for the abuses that happened in the catholic church.
The Catholic Church's top exorcist has warned that Satan is alive and well and causing a whole load of problems at the Holy See.

Father Gabriele Amorth, who according to The Times is president of honour of the Association of Exorcists, said the Vatican's current problems - including recurrent child abuse allegations and a brewing gay prostitution scandal - can be largely attributed to Lucifer's visitation at the Vatican.

I laughed when I read this, how much more pathetic can the church be, anything so they can wiggle their way out of accepting responsibility.

Well if you believe in the devil, as the church does, this is a perfectly reasonable explanation. The problem being, it's all a bit silly.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

The devil has sort of been part and parcel of the whole "god" deal for 2000 + years. Do you think that they're gonna give up on him, now that he comes in a such a convenient scapegoat ?

    Also, just for the record ...before the current pope became pope, as cardinal Ratzinger, he was head of this little department for a good while;
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , previously known as the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition

so you wouldn't really expect HIM to to re-write the modus operandi of the catholic church, now would you?

Us Catholics believe that when we commit a sin that we are to blame but it was done under the sinister influence of the devil.

for example, in the garden of Eden when God asked why they ate of the fruit they blamed the devil and because of their refusal to take responsability for their own actions were thus thrown out of the garden of Eden.

when a priest attributes evil actions to Satan he is blaming him for his evil influence not for the commiting the sin, but of course only Catholics who are educated in that area will see it that way.

No surprise, the Pope is Satans leading servent on Earth.

"Vicarius Fili Del" translates to "Substitute Son of God", a title found on his hat. :p

Add up the letters in Roman numerals

So instead of looking within and recognising the potential for evil with in each of us, (not that decent people go around abusing children), another pathetic excuse is being trumped up by the Vatican. (Which possibly has to be one of the most evil institutions on this planet.)

Oh great, so goodness comes from god and evil comes from bad ole' satan. cop out.

Not good enough, true responsiblity is admitting each paedophile's individual responsiblity and quit trying to hide under the church's extensive reach and abusing people's spiritual faith.

Credit where it is due again!
Here is one religious person whom I can have respect for.

    Cardinal Christoph Schönborn,
A cardinal seen as a future candidate for the papacy has broken a Vatican taboo by raising the possibility that priestly celibacy is among the causes of the sex abuse scandal sweeping the Roman Catholic Church.

Looks like the Church is finally acknowledging its back-against-the-wall position in what is most probably a calculated admission. I'd love to know what his take is on other causes. Will likely have to wait until the devil interferes with European-area celibacy law reformulation to hear more :pac:

Tbh, I doubt the Pope is going to be impressed:
According to The Times, Amorth blames "cardinals who do not believe in Jesus, and bishops who are linked to the Demon".

"When one speaks of 'the smoke of Satan' [a phrase coined by Pope Paul VI in 1972] in the holy rooms, it is all true – including these latest stories of violence and paedophilia," he said.
While the church would happily allude to the influence of Satan / evil in such matters as paedophile priests, they don't tend to trot out actual demonic possession as an excuse any more, and haven't for centuries.

The implication that members of his Curia are atheist and / or possessed will not sit well with Benny, I guarantee you!

Expect "the Pope's top exorcist" to be forcibly retired very quickly! ;)

Heh, I'll start my stopwatch on how long this "exorcist" keeps his post.

Still, though, he has some nerve to say that. I'd love to see him personally say that to every victim's face.

I think the devil is getting a bad rep, he hasn't killed as many people as God, loves rock music, drugs, and sex. :pac:

Satan is the ultimate scapegoat it seems. First it was the gays, then it was the atheists now its the devil.FFS can't they just accept any personal responisibility?

Wonderful news! It's the fault of Lucifer, that's great to hear, and there was me blaming the rapists for raping those poor innocent children. I never think things through properly, I really must work on that. I hadn't even considered that devil fella to be honest -Tempting those poor lonely priests with those chirpy childrens lovely botties, as if God would do something like that, it has the Devil written all over it!
I'm so glad that it's all finally been cleared up -and without anyone having to apologise too -bonus!

Great! I'm off to mass now...

Now, my theology isn't what it used to be, buuuuut.

As i understand it, the Devil doesn't make you do anything, he just tempts you into doing things but he can't actually cause any action. That's all you.
Seeing as we all have free will and all that.

So, from a strictly religious point of view it makes sense. The individual priests that are guilty are responsible for their own actions but the fact that they did them would be seen as proof that the devil is still around.

    Not really all that shocking.

TBH, i think this is a cop out excuse. A vow of celibacy does not make someone a child abuser or rapist. Nobody is forced to become a priest (not anymore anyway)

Regarding exorcisms, we have two official exorcists in Ireland. One of which is quite active and is considering a leader in the field. Im involved in a film on the topic and the team met the priest. A humbling experience. He does lectures in some of our colleges and has written a book. The stories he had would make the hair stand on your neck. the director of the film has starting going back to mass since talking to him!

I think this 'exorcist' has it right.

'Evil' is just a term for used by ignorant people to describe mental illness, and I think there are many mentally ill people in the Vatican & church.

If South Park were doing an episode (okay, another episode...) taking the peas out of the Catholic Church, then this devil line is exactly what you'd expect to hear.
